When I was new to riding, I had a bad habit of leaving the disk lock on my rotor when I'd try to pull out of the parking spot. You'd get about 3 feet before a big "clunk" and you and the bike would immediately fall over. I finally got over that habit, and then yesterday I went to roll my bike backwards out of the parking spot. I got about 2 feet before I heard this horrible CRUNCH! Ooops.... needless to say, I have the bike backed into it's parking spot today, so I wont be able to make that mistake again.
At least the bike is gray, so it doesn't stand out THAT bad, and it's fiberglass so it shouldn't be that hard to fix. It did crack near the bottom mounting hole, and up where the top meets the side. Someday in the future I planned on painting the bike blue, so at least it's only going to be a temporary eye sore. |

I used some SEM panel repair stuff that was pretty amazing, FWIW. It works better with a special gun, but you could probably bodge something up for one repair. It was a two part epoxy. |

I've thought about putting it on the back wheel instead, but I feel like if someone was to try to steal my bike, it would at least be a tiny bit harder with a locked up front wheel, as opposed to a locked up back wheel that they could drag behind them(I know they'll get it if they really want it anyway). I just parked facing the opposite direction today so it would just hit the brake caliper instead of the fender, plus I'll see it as I'm walking up to the bike. I'll check out the youtube video when I'm not on my work computer. Reepi... I'll look into the SEM stuff. I figured I'd just have to get some fiberglass and put a few layers on the backside. I'll look into that stuff though. I'm less worried about the big crunch, and more concerned with the small hairline cracks in it. Hopefully the bike's vibrations don't make it crack worse, since they're so small at this point I don't really even know what a good way is to deal with those. I feel like someday I'll hit a bump, the crack will split all the way across, the fender will hit my front tire and go shooting 30 feet in front of me haha. If I need to, I can just glob some stuff in there, sand it all down smooth, and then just paint the fender black. My xb had a black fender and it looked fine that way. |

Do Buells even get stolen anymore? |

I used to do that too. This solved the problem. https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-340102-Orange-Re minder-Cable/dp/B0022ZN6M0 |

I'd like to hope they don't! Even if no one wants to steal it as a Buell, I could certainly see someone wanting to steal it to jam the engine into their chopper project. I thought about one of those cables. I was thinking maybe one of those locks that squeezes your brake lever into your bar and locks it there would solve both problems at once. It'd lock the wheel from moving at all, and there wouldn't be any way to forget it was there. It would also even have a third bonus of letting me start the bike to warm up without it being able to walk it's way out of the parking spot. I might have to look into one of those. Edit: I googled the Grip-Lock. As much as the idea sounds convenient, and the reviews on amazon were all pretty good, it appears the body is made from plastic, which is weird... and I hadn't considered the fact that all anyone would need to do is unbolt the brake lever or one of the banjo bolts and you could roll the bike away. I hope you have your buell inside when at home ,and not standing somewhere on a parking lot. I have one of this , https://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Security/Motorbike -Scooter/Brake-disc-locks/GRANIT-Detecto-X-Plus-80 08 |

Yup! It has a whole garage to itself. I've also been toying with the idea of putting an anchor in the floor so I have something solid to lock it to random times like if we're going out of town. That abus lock looks pretty serious! I have one larger one with a motion sensing alarm built into it. I think I remember it being a bit too sensitive though, so I had pulled out the battery and just use it as a normal lock. I'd love to have a giant Kryptonite chain to lock it when I'm at work, but I'm not looking to haul that heavy thing in my bag every day. |

Locking the brake lever down will only work if the thief is too dumb to know how to bleed the brake. Josh, you are lucky only the fender strut cracked. I saw a guy in Hollywood once try to do a burnout while his brake disc was locked with one of those things. Tore his caliper off. When I use one (generally on my Fat Boy), I put it on the rear and position it so the lock hits something solid as soon as the wheel begins to move. Anchor in the floor....electricity in the garage.....tools like grinding wheels laying around....a determined thief can overcome great obstacles. But to get determined about a twenty year old race bike, he'd have to be a collector himself. |

A blank key on a phone cordy key chainy thingy attached to the lock and stuck in the ignition is a good reminder that you've locked your front brake. |

Yeah the lever lock came up with a few drawbacks as soon as I started to think that one through. I'm just happy it stopped at the fender. If I had been someone who rides without fender it would've hit right into the fork tube, and most likely would've put a nice enough dent in it to let some fork oil leak out every time the fork compressed. I've always backed my bike into parking spots, just recently been pulling in nose first due to the way this new parking lot is set up, but I've since switched around the other way. Now I see the lock as I'm walking up to the bike, and when I park I hook the bike key to the lock key on a carabiner, so there's no way I'd be able to start the bike without remembering it. I've got a broken fender, some people live in countries without access to common medications... I like to look at things on the grand scale and realize it was still a good day overall haha. |

Bag the lock. Seriously. If they want the 400 lb motorcycle...they'll freakin pick it up and carry it. |

I saw some of those on eBay, does that style fit the S1 forks the same as the newer style? |

Just a random update for everyone who enjoys a good chuckle.... A year and a half after I cracked that fender, I finally got around to fixing it. I clamped a board to the back to hold the part flat, I filled in the outside with some fiberglass resin. I also sanded down the inside to remove the paint and laid down two more layers of fiberglass and sanded it down smooth. I was going to stop in an auto parts store to pick up some touch up paint that was a close match, just so it wasn't as obvious. I had just finished my winter maintenance plus a few upgrades(isolators, X1 swingarm, grenade disc, detent plate, crank oil seal, etc...). I had the bike in the driveway after installing the fender and taking it for a test ride. We had to run to the store, so I just stuck the disc lock on the bike and left it in the driveway. Later at night before I started getting ready for bed I went out to roll the bike back into the garage. 2 feet back.... CRUNCH... Talk about not learning your lesson the first time. From now on, that lock is ONLY going on the back rotor, and I'll just wait for a rainy weekend to pull off the fender and start over again. Just got the S1 back on the road after 7 months, so I'll just continue to live with the damaged fender. |
