My bike needs some new gaskets, i need to know the best way to do a top end (piston and barrel) rebuild, I mean, is it possible to do it by removing the gas tank, o do I need to take the engine to out of the X1 frame. Thanks |

You'll need to pivot the motor down a bit, not remove it from the frame. |

Thanks for the replies, spoke with a friend and he said he would do all the work, and check all the engine, so I may take the bike to him and let him do the work,. |

I would suggest if you are pulling it apart to put xb rocker boxes on it is a great upgrade. Nhrs heads and piston 1250 kit is also nice!

I have the XB rocker boxes ready, don't need to go up to 1250, the engine is plenty enough for me. On my previous X1 I had the NRHS 1250 kit and had a full d&d header and muffler and it was dyno tuned in Cheste ( last race of the year in MotoGP), I have the race ecm, as a spare. |

Are you at least changing the base gaskets? Pulling the heads will un-seat the old ones. |

I've seen a ton of guys on here replacing their rocker box covers with XB covers, saying they breathe better. I don't currently seem to have any sort of problem at all with my heads leaking oil out of the breather, is there really a reason for that upgrade aside from a "because I could" kind of thing? |

What is best: use Harley gaskets or use cometic? |

It is nothing you will see a gain in hp from. It is a better design it flows better the oil is know kept in. You may not see oil right now but you will. Look in your carb or filter thats where it is run into. With the pvc vavle on top the side bolts that drain are replaced and the mess contained through the valves and a catch can. By no means is it a must but it is a good upgrade. |

The main difference is the Sportster type breather valve is in the rocker box (in the middle section). Some oil is going to collect and blow through. Not a big deal (especially if you do NOT vent to the intake). Since the XB breather valve is located in the top of the box the only oil that gets through is from the oily air in the engine. Gravity is your friend. The valve in the XB PCV looking valve is actually the same rubber umbrella valve as the Sportster set up that our bikes came with. There is no difference in breathing. Bikes that have big problems with oil blowing out the breather is most likely from a greater amount of crankcase pressure. If the piston rings aren't sealing well you get more pressure flowing past the piston which makes for more air flowing out the breathers so you get more oil coming with it. If your bike is healthy, no problem. For gaskets I like; Cometic or James for cylinder base gaskets. Cometic for head gaskets. Harley for the rocker base gasket. Harley for the push rod tube rubber. |
