Yesterday after work the mighty 06 Useless barely wanted to start but it did. I rode home in a cold rain thinking a new battery is in order soon. This morning she no start, dash lights go out, hunka crap, take the Triumph instead, think bad thoughts about Useless all day, going to fix it with a hatchet, maybe. Get home and 12.7 volts at rest, 12.4 volts with key on but only clickee clickee. Swapped the starter relay for an AUX one and back in business! Take back bad thoughts about Useless. If only everything was this simple. | ||

Yeah that happens sometimes. Tell ya what happened with mine today. I have not been much of a rider as of late. Today I got the ol '06 out of the shed. I couldn't take it anymore! I have been working out in the sun in front of my shop lately and hearing bikes go by all day. Sometimes that will drive me nuts! So I got the Uly out and washed it. Why the hell do the battery cables bolts get loose on a bike that has not been running? Tightened them up and it fired on the first stroke. After it warmed up I rode it about a mile lapping my yard and field. Sombich runs as awesome as ever. Last time out was early September I think. I didn't have anywhere to go so I parked it in the drive and went back to work. SO something else was bugging me. Poor old Blastulys sitting in the shed covered in bird and bug droppings. It was last out to run early last spring. Last time on the road was March of '15. So I figured what the hell it needs to breathe now and again. I rolled it out, charged the battery and washed the crap and cobwebs off from it. When it got to 13.2 Volts on the charger I hit the starter and it fired off in two or three revolutions. I popped the Ulysses Low seat back on it and rode it three miles lapping around my property. It ran flawlessly. It'd be easy for me to sell these damn Buells if they would not start or they would just run like crap. I have them farkled to where I like them. It would cost a shit-ton of money to replace them and set something up to be happy with it. It is bad enough that I cannot ride much anymore, but I cannot let them go at the current low market prices that I have seen, at least when they run this good. One of those things that I could not replace them for what they would sell for. Damned old airhead Buells.  | ||

So today I went to step #2. Got the Uly out and rode 65 miles on one of my favorite local loops. I wish my physicality was running as good as this bike does. What a beautiful day it was.  | ||

I keep a spare relay on hand! Its a sinking feeling for me when out and I get the no click, no nothing. After I replaced mine, starter seemed to spin better. | ||

I do need to pick up an extra relay or two. The old pile is still chugging along no matter what the weather. Today sucked, 50 miles of steady rain on the highway but as long as it doesn't ice up over night tomorrow will be better. | ||

Your battery can show 12 volts+ but it shouldn't drop below 9volts while cranking. If it does, the battery is bad. Even if the battery is fairly new, there has been a lot of Chinese junk on the market. That includes name band and even Harley batteries | ||

I think the v rod and uly use the same battery. I wonder what other brands and models use that same battery? |
