I've acquired a basically new stock muffler for my 2002 M2L. (Thanks, robertl!) My Uly muffler has me thinking I should get this thing ceramic coated, but I've not heard anyone complain about rust on pre-XB mufflers. Anyone? |

Mufflers don't seem to be rust-prone at all, and plain steel ones can be repainted with cheap high-temp Rustoleum, or BBQ paint anyway. Ceramic might seem ideal but cost effectiveness speaking, its not. Ceramic coating the header is a huge, and immediately perceptible, improvement. Much better to spend ceramic coating money there first. |

They're all rust prone if you ride through winter on salted roads. Ceramic coating is better than regular paint but not much. In the UK Harley dealers used to get mild steel mufflers ceramic coated under warranty but they'd go again in no time. I still use my oe S2 mufflers but never take it out once they've started salting the roads. One is ceramic coated, one was painted by me - they look the same but I don't do many miles on it these days so hardly representative. |

Do you think it would be better with rhino liner? Or does it get too hot for that? Mine leaks enough oil so I don't have to worry about rust |

Bedliner is rubberized - too hot. I spritz mine (S2 and 1125CR) with some BBQ black whenever they're on the lift for service. My Uly has a silver-coated muffler that was on a parts bike I bought. I tried it out for kicks...and even it's showing some rust spots. Not sure if it's ceramic (doesn't seem thick enough) or just a powdercoat or some sort...but my stocker may go under a wire brush and get a fresh coat of black, for reinstallation and easy touching-up. |

Agree with touching up the paint when it becomes dull. I keep doing that...so far I'm winning |

Thanks for the input. I'd kept on top of my Uly muffler for the first few years, but have lost motivation of late. I've been letting it rust like a hulk in the harbour. I pulled the too-loud-for-me Buell-labeled Supertrapp that was on my M2L, changed the primary fluid, and installed the OEM muffler yesterday morning. I took it for an hour's ride or so. I'm loving the stock sound and noticeably restored the lowdown torque. When I opened up the SuperTrapp, I discovered the internal cap and discs were not at all present. That explained the newfound torque! The packing was in pretty good shape, as it didn't have much work to do. I suspect that a previous owner pulled the discs & cap out and tossed them. Or maybe that's the way it was installed? Either way, It will be a $200 CDN kiss to quiet it down with new cap, screws, and discs from SuperTrapp. For now, I'll leave it in the shed as a winter's project for the day I find some donor parts on the cheap. |

So glad to hear it worked out and great doing business with you. I rode a few brand new motorcycles this past weekend and it was so nice to only hear wind and not the exhaust (V&H) resonating in my helmet. |
