08 XT. Just had a bad headlight, which I replaced and noticed my turn signals not working. looks at the bulbs, all good. Replaced electronic signal flasher and still not turn signals. Fuse good. What have I missed?? |

Check your ground leads. |

Look at the front of the frame. there are three wires going to a torx bolt. One will be broken. I have fixed mine (poorly) three times now. Eventually, I will not be in a hurry and will fix it correctly. |

Definitely check the ground connections, I just had the same problem with headlight and blinkers and it was a broken ground wire from the flasher relay. I also found out that there are ISO and JSO type relays, I never knew that. |

Ok I inspected all the grounds I can see they are good and tight. The one on the front frame behind the headlight is intact. Now what?? |

Break out a meter and start checking for power and grounds |

Ok, my ground look good but I am out of my element on finding the fault. If anyone in the area that wants to help in the Cincinnati area, please do. I hate riding without turn signals. |

is your tail lamp and lic plate light working? They share a ground under the seat with the front and rear turn signals also. The flasher is a seperate ground (Message edited by twisteduly on September 25, 2016) |

Go back to your grounds on the front of the frame. The screw might be tight but the wires might be broken under the insulation. Turn on your blinkers and wiggle the ground wires around and make sure they aren't broke. Mine were like that. |

Pull the blinker plug from the relay, you can then turn on the blinker + ignition key and short the left or right connection to the center one, one of those should get the blinker light to turn on (no blinking), if so it is a bad ground wire, if neither works it is something else. You can measure the voltage on the plug, if you don't see one connection at 12V then you have a bad power wire. If that is good then start thinking about taking the switch apart or going to a repair shop. I personally don't really like tearing into the wiring harness |

Here is another line of investigation - the blinkers and tail light are powered by a separate set of contacts in the ignition switch. Ages ago I had the blinkers fail and it turned out to be power rather than grounds at that particular failure. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/654610.html?1318382410 Let me know if you need any additional info around the switch disassembly if you do have that issue - some of the old picture links might be messed up by now as I posted that stuff years ago. |

I'll back up the ignition switch. That took quite a while to work out. If I jiggled the key just right, the turn signals worked. Fortunately the switch unit on the back of the lock is available separately. I dared fate and disassembled and cleaned my original switch. Still works. |

Update - I am 100% positive that it is NOT a grounding issue. I have worked through all the grounding points and tested. All grounds are good. I have tested handle bar switch after cleaning it for power and I see non to the turn signal switch but power to the horn, high/low beam switch and headlight flasher. BTW I do have brake light but no license plate light or parking light. (Message edited by Cincymachine on October 06, 2016) |

OK, the power for the blinker relay comes from the battery via the ignition switch and the Accessories fuse (10Amp). Check the Accessories fuse is OK. If it is blown then replace it. If it blows again with the ignition switched on then you have a short downstream and given this supply goes to multiple places I suspect you would need help to find that one. If the fuse doesn't blow and the blinkers now work then I would guess the tail light is OK and we are done. If the fuse wasn't blown check to see if you have +12 volts present at this fuse with the ignition switched on. If you do then there is a break between the fuse and the tail light/parking light/blinker relay. If there isn't +12volts at the fuse then there is either a break between there and the ignition switch or possibly a flaky ignition switch itself. There are other possible faults (eg a break on the supply side of the ignition switch only for the section that switches the parking light/tail light/blinker) but they would be outside the bell curve. The fuse is obviously the first thing to check - I'm not sure if you have already done that? The ignition switch isn't that common but certainly something a few of us have seen so would be definitely something to eliminate of you don't have +12 volts at the accessories fuse. |

Don't you just love these threads ... "all fixed" but the person that asked for help can't be bothered to help anyone else down the line? |

I've done that. I mean to post a nice summary with pictures, but keep putting it off because I don't have the pictures yet, and waiting for a block of time to do a nice writeup. It is nice when people take the time to come back and post what they learned (even if they just learned entropy is a bitch ). |

Bumping this thread - I lost both turn signals on my '08 Uly, and after reading another post on this forum, went looking for the bad connection. With the bike turned on and the left signal 'activated', I used a length of wire to bridge the relay ground terminal (black wire) to a good chassis ground. The signal lit and started flashing. With proof I had a bad ground to the relay, I next inspected "Ground 4", on the front of the steering head. It has two pairs of ground leads connected with crimp connectors to the bolt. Using the 'wiggle test', I found that one of the wires would make and break the connection. Pulling on each one resulted in one coming loose from its heatshrink insulator. I remade the connections on those two wires, coated the whole area with silicone grease, and tightened the bolt. Flasher works 'nominally'. |
