I'm going to dig into the archives, I recall something about some bikes that have an issue with the timing mark on the alternator rotor causing similar symptoms. |

WASG...sounds like the ignition timing is synchronized with the wrong cylinder (that is: the front cylinder ignition "signal" is firing the rear cylinder and then the rear cylinder signal fires when the front intake valves are open)I'm guessing this based on your comment that the rear cam was off by 1 tooth...this would only happen if the shop pulled the cams for replacement AND failed to lock the crank or worse rotated the crank with the cams out...if you have ever worked on an American V8 and pulled the distributor out ...it looses "time" with the crank and cams...you have to make sure the distributor fires the Number 1 cylinder on the compression stroke or the engine runs like crap and back fires into the carb...unfortunately Rotax did NOT put timing marks on the rotor so you could us a timing light to check the "timing" ( synchronization of ignition timing to each cylinder)...or the crank position sensor is bad...or you got a bad coil...check the easy stuff first...down load the manual and see if you can find some replacement parts on ebay ....some early 2008 units had a poorly machined (stamped) ignition trigger wheel ...the crank position sensor couldn't "see" the trigger wheel ( due to some burrs??) and the engine would miss fire and run poorly....if you are in good standing with the shop...you may want to quiz them ( nicely) and ask if they removed the cams.. if they did ...they need to verify that they locked the crank for the correct cylinder ( front or rear) before the installed the cams...hope this helps also (chk the you tube link): http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/722255.html?1380812827 |

Any back story on this? i find it hard to believe that one day you went to the bike and out of the blue it wouldnt rev over 4k rpms and the cams being out of time are the cause. if that was the case there should have been some sort of indication the bike was running poorly the last time it was ridden. It is very possible that now the cams are out of time if they were not to begin with and the dealer has been messing with them. How does it run at idle? If base cam timing is off it is going to run rough at an idle as well through the rev range. seems more like and engine position sensor issue, like the ECM is having a hard time figuring out when to fire the ignition coils. |

not my bike but a guy i know bought it non running. it had supposedly had the top end rebuilt. hard to relay messages and what not as i haven't heard the bike. he took it in to get it running and this(the picture) is what they did to it |
