2006 20k miles and all of a sudden this starts. Anyone have any shifting issues over the years? Its easier when its cold but getting tougher to get in gear as it gets warmer. |

The Primary chain gets tighter as the engine gets hot; good idea to check that adjustment. |

That has all been adjusted. New trans oil and it still does it. All the years I have been following the Uly I have yet to see anyone have transmission issues. Why me?? lol |

If you have the belt off for some other reason, put it in neutral and turn the front belt sprocket by hand, and feel if it is crunchy or bindy. There have been a few 5th gear drive assembly failures, and that can load up the transmission and cause odd shifting problems. Not that it really matters if that's it or not, given you have to split the cases to fix that also. |

I too have had these issues on my 06 uly with 38k. I replaced the while clutch assembly due to bad bearings, plates and springs. Also the shift pawl assembly can get bent. After this my bike ran 90% better, still not perfect. But check those if you can. And good luck. |

Can't find a shift pawl assembly in the service manual. Is it called something else? Thanks for the advice! |

I don't know what it actually is, its the part inside the primary that touches the shift shaft. I think the clutch has to be off to see it. There are little springs on it that can hang up. Im just speaking from what I saw in mine |

You need part manual if you don't have one. The pictures are much better then in the service manual. |

Thanks Jim and Blake. I think the mechanic took a look at all that. http://www.ukbeg.com/pash/2006%20Firebolt%20Manual /sm06b.pdf Page 3 figure 6-50? |

Did it affect just one gear? |

It started just affecting 3rd to 4th changes, but then seized completely in 3rd. That's when I took it to my Mechanic when we looked in the primary. Now sometimes it will be clunky changing from 2-3-4 when hot, but rarely. |

That interesting. Mine so far is just 3rd to 4th. Shifting down through is flawless. |

Can you shift it with the engine off and rocking the bike forward and back? |

I can't get it into 3rd with engine off. Is that bad? |

I was hoping you would be able to feel/hear something with the engine off. The tubers had a detent plate on the end of the shifter drum that was held on with an E clip. They were prone to working loose and giving similar crappy shifting effects. I don't recall seeing anything like that the times I have been in my XB. Of course, I was looking for my own problems: clutch release lip, starter. |

Put it on a rear stand when doing This ,It's much easier to shift through the gears! |

If it flops but doesn't shift, that leans more towards messed up shifting mechanism (pawl, etc). If it binds and won't go into gear, that leans more towards messed up transmission. But either symptom can be either. |
