I thought I might be overheating because the days it happened it was hot. 95+ degrees. I get out on the highway and rip along at 90 mph and after about 3 or 4 minutes the check engine light goes on. The bike still runs perfectly and if I slow down to under 3500rpm the light will go out. This is a 2009 Uly with 12,000 miles. Everything is stock and this is my first XB. I own a 2002 Tuber and a roadking, so I'm a bit lost on how to retrieve ECM codes or if they are even stored? |

Pressure wash the oil cooler to make sure it is working at it's best without built up dirt and bugs. |

Is your cel blinking when it comes on? Or just a steady light? |

Is that a low seat? Is it touching the ecm plug when it gets hot? |

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the O2 sensor. Try to check out the stored codes. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/784612.html?1469145216 |

next step is to get the code, the ECM knows what it thinks is wrong. |

I agree with motorfish, mine was doing the same, turned out to be the o2 sensor...for sure read the codes, though |

Make that 3 for 02 sensor. Mine would come on between 75~80MPH, indicated. I've never run mine @ 90MPH for more than a few seconds. |

Hugie, Do you have a service manual? In my '07 manual the procedure (for retrieving stored codes) is in section 4 (fuel system). Section 4.5 is Check Engine Lamp Diagnostics. Your '09 may be different. All you need is something to short two pins together on the "data link connector" under the seat. It's difficult to describe the procedure, and much better if you have the manual. |

I'm not sure how to retrieve the codes, I have the service manual on copy paper. The light is not blinking, it's on steady until I slow down for about 5 minutes. Then it goes out. The seat is a stock "Tall" seat. I have a spacer under the seat protecting the ECM. From what I can see there is no contact at all. The oil cooler is clean and the bike uses 20/50 mobile 1 synthetic. I'm a little confused on how the ECM works and what changes have been made on the 2009 Uly. I know I wanted this bike because the TPS doesn't need manual setting and it had a few other upgrades. Is there a hand held programmer or scanner I can buy to check the stored codes? The light is currently out and hasn't returned since the cooler weather moved in. Thank you for all the replies! |

You have a service manual - good. So, check in the index, under "check engine lamp diagnostics". There is a procedure to retrieve codes, without special equipment. If the CEL is off, you may or may not have stored codes. |

I posted links in the Bonneville thread for Jon, the service manual points you to the electrical diagnostic manual for this |

Hmmm, I don't have that special wire to jump 1 and 2 but I'm assuming it's similar to my 82 corvette. I just take any wire and jump 1 and 2 . Then start counting lights. I'm a little confused about clearing the codes. It said something about 50 start and run cycles??? That sounds like a lot of work just to clear a code... |

There is software and a hardware adapter that can clear codes on demand, so the 50 start and run cycle thing is just normal behavior for "I must have gotten better". Yup, any wire to jump. I used a bread tie in a Ducati dealer parking lot once (no joke). |

A million dollars says it is the O2 sensor. I had a similar condition. Either the sensor is bad or the wiring has worn through. You can also use a jumper cable with alligator clips to check the codes. |

Mine has done that twice. It has no 02 sensor. No code stored or present. No problems since. I still run the piss out of it. |

Now that the weather cooled down a bit, it went away. I beat the crap out of it and no light. I was going to jump the pins but I'm not sure which pin or even if I have the right plug. Is it the plug under the seat that's capped off? I think it has 4 wires going to it. |
