I know this is a very subjective topic but what have you found to be the best replacement for the D616. I want something that handles well on the asphalt but also does at least as well as the D616 off pavement. |

The replacement for the D616 was the Pirelli sync. That tire did ok on Jeep trails but the carcass was so thin it was easily punctured. Pirelli then came out with the Scorpion Trails. These had a thicker carcass with the same basic tread. I ran these for a while and they did pretty well on mileage and off road traction. It was a good compromise anyway. I ran for two hours in a constant downpour at 75 mph and they felt very stable. I've been riding all street lately and run the Michelin PR4's and love them but they don't look too good for anything off road. |

I'm running the pirelli scorpion trail II. They are great on the road, very good in the corners and quiet on the road. Not so good in mud or wet grass. |

I ran the Scorpion Trails and really liked how they handled on the road and in the rain but they were not very tough. I had a few punctures in them while riding in the dirt. I preferred the D616 in the dirt over the Scorpion Trails. I preferred the Trails over the D616 in all but heavy rain and off pavement. I was really looking for something that had a bit more off pavement ability than the Trail IIs but still handled the pavement and rain very well. |

Somebody needs to do a 616 in a dual compound. Just sayin. |

Am I the only one who values the D616 for the fact that it was light in weight? I'm very interested in replacement tires but I want to use a tire that is not heavy. The lightness of a D616 contributes greatly to the nice handling on these bikes. |

Now that has possibilities...but no magic phrase "dual compound construction" |

That looks like a trials bike pattern, and I have seen first hand that kind of tire doing MUCH better than you would expect for conditions relative to a monstor knob knobbie. I've seen it on a KLR-650 and one of the big KTM Adventures (the single, not the twin). |

Looks like a great tire but I wonder how it would hold up on a Uly. I read some reviews on this tire. Most seemed to be running smaller bikes with less power and the wear was an issue. |

I ran a pair of Metzler Tourances on my 2014 TEX and they were great on the street and competent off-piste. And I got 10K miles out of them! They've been replaced with the Metzler Tourance Next which supposedly get even more mileage and are improved for off road. |

Has anyone tried the Avon TRAILRIDER AV54 |

I really liked the Dunlop D616 tired but since they are no longer made and I don't do any off road riding on my Ulysses, I switched to the Dunlop Roadsmarts. I like the handling better because of the front tire's tread design but I still only get about the Sam mileage out of them as the D616. I thought the dual compound would get better mileage but doesn't seem to for me |

I run PR3 (and as they wear out, PR4) on all my bikes and love them. Awesome mileage, great transitional handling, good grip and excellent wet behavior. I just can't do gravel or dirt anymore on the Uly |

I think I'll give the Avon Trailrider a try. Spent some time reading and watching reviews and think this might be the best tire to replace the D616. I do like riding off pavement and have also done some single track with my Uly. I also spend some time riding with some younger guys on sportbikes and don't want to give up the corner ability. Here are a few links: -Scrambler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZEjALSvBDg -Bonneville http://earth-roamers.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-new- avon-trailrider.html I'll let you know what I think after I've had them on a while |

I'll need tires in about 2k miles, I hope to hear some good news from you about the Trail riders, thanks and good luck! |

I like the PR2, and have done lots of gravel road miles. They hold up pretty well. I recently bought a Continental TrailAttack2 front, from Craigs List, (someone who ordered the wrong size). Now need to get a Conti rear. Planning to mount the set, a couple thousand miles from now. Anyone else using Conti's? |

Took my first ride on the Trailrider. Rode 2 up on a short ride. Put on about 70 miles with about 40 on dirt or gravel. Didn't push it but was impressed at the traction on a washed out fairly steep trail. They felt at least as competent off pavement as the D616. Didn't do any aggressive pavement cornering but they felt good with the cornering that we did. With my limited experience I'd buy them again. I'll keep you posted. |

Looks like a good choice. I checked out that first link, showing different conditions, Heavy Rain, Broken Pavement, Sand, and even through Greese (locking up the front wheel...?) |

I've put almost 200 miles on it so far. Still no hard cornering but I have done some highway as well as interstate. So far I really like this rear tire. I don't know when I'll get a chance to take it out for some serious corning and more serious off road but will keep you posted.

I forgot to mention that this tire makes a bit more noise than anything else I've run on this bike. It doesn't bother me, I don't ride this for quiet time. |

Hmmm.... And available in OEM uly sizes? Might have to look into those, that review article was pretty impressive. |

If you really need the dirt traction with good road manners the Michelin Ankee III is a good choice. I've heard it doesn't last as long in the past but supposedly it's been re engineered for longer life. The Avon is a great tire but the Ankee will give you a little more in the dirt. I've washed out too many times in grass and dirt to play with the Avon |
