Hey guys,

New Kid on the block. i recently picked up an 01 Buell Blast and after some small fixes, cleaning the carburetor and un-sticking the kickstand sensor, got it running. I've been riding it around for about 2 months now and I want beef up the power a bit more. it is currently all stock but first thing I've got planned is a 2" straight pipe exhaust with a baffle. I know that ill have to re-tune the carb, but I want to figure out what to do with the intake first. I want to do away with the stock box and keep it small so i'm deciding between a velocity stack and Dan's super boot and intake. if anyone has any input or better ideas they would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the neighborhood. I too bought a 2001 about 2 years ago, though seldom post, so I am probably a noobie, too. I have ridden for 47ish years. This one had 607 miles on it when I got it, though it had sat for 3 years. Just now really got it moving again, due to a variety of non-bike related reasons. So far I cleaned the carb, replaced the ignition module. There was a bad run of then in 2001 and they start to fail after about 30-45 mins of riding, once they do start to go. I changed the handlebars to ProForm ATV Mids (offroad bars) & yes, i can still lock them. What a great change of hand position w/o leaning over the tank. Also put on LED sigs & relay. Just picked up Michelin City Grip tires for to put on in the near future. You are asking some of the questions I am considering right now, so I'm going to watch the responses you get.

Either intake is fine. If you decide on the velocity stack YOU MUST get the correct Outerwears filter otherwise YOU WILL have problems. The key on filters is that whatever you put over the carb mouth can potentially choke it, so a small filter must breathe well and not restrict. Sounds simple, but I've seen many failures because small looks cool. Bigger is better, when it comes to air filters (I'll spare you the grand explanation).
A straight pipe is loud on the ears and not quite the power producer you might think. You may wind up with very narrow powerband gains and can even lose power, especially depending on the baffle used.
A good exhaust is the most bang for your buck when it comes to the Blast.*
The next step is to decide how far you want to take your Blast for power. You can go several routes and wind up with the same power gains, but one way will be a dead end, the other way opening up for more power gains.

*'traditional' thinking is that a big ole straight pipe gains the most power and because it's a single cylinder engine you don't have the "scavenge" effect of a multi cylinder exhaust. A tuned exhaust uses a stepped pipe and specific lengths and can still effect the same "scavenge" effect of a multi cylinder engine. White Brothers and some others use "tuning discs" at the end of their exhaust to mimic certain effects. Anyway there's a lot to it that I could never explain simply!

Needless to say: "how far do you want to go"? : )

Gearheaderiko,

Thanks for the input. I've been reading the post here for the past few months regarding the velocity stack and the corresponding filter and believe that is the direction ill go. as for the exhaust, do you think it would be possible to replicate the effect of the tuning disks with a baffle. i am using the straight pipe mainly because its a donor from my uncle and i'm short on funds to go with a Vance & Hines or something similar. I don't think my uncle has any problems with fabricating a baffle or shaping an existing one. Am I right to think that the tuning disks are stepping down in size to create the effect? As far as building for power right now i'm looking to get just a little more out of it. then once I step up to another bike for riding and commuting i want to push it as far as it will go. All and all i'm mainly using the blast to learn both as a rider and in the mechanics of how engines function.

No - the discs central hole is larger than the pipe size by 1 to 2 inches.

Concur. There isn't any way to simply tune your pipe for better power the way you could with steps or discs. When it comes to carbs or exhaust, EZ is the man to ask. You'll also get tons of other opinions, pro or con, on any exhaust mod you'll make. It would be easier to build your engine for the pipe you have! A baffle inside the pipe isn't going to help. You can throw a muffler with an inside diameter at least as big as the straight pipe and not lose much, even gain the back pressure needed. There are lots of used Harley shorty mufflers out there that will work ( keeping in mind your low/no budget) that will perform as good as the V&H muffler. Easy to mount with a muffler clamp and band steel.
Or just run it straight. Tuning the carb, getting it close, is not that hard. You have a very small range of jets to work with that get you close. It will be a great learning experience. Only cops and neighbors will be your downfall!!!
Just make sure you get the right Outerwears fliter-VERY important. The bare bones of a straight pipe and V-stack should go well together!!!

remember, you'll be tuning your Blast for higher rpms-that's where the power is. Tuning it for low rpms when it's making about 15hp is pointless (unless your pulling tree stumps)!

You'll have to drill holes in it to have it mount where you want it pointed. Depending on its actual size, it may not end up pointing in a good direction.
It'll work, but not the way it was intended for on a sportster.

Anyone know where I can get this notorious "Dan's boot" I keep hearing about all over this forum? I don't seem to see it on eBay.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I was looking a couple of weeks ago, but either Gearhead or EZ posted saying the stopped making them for a bit. They're not on his ebay store anymore... hopefully he starts selling them again soon.

He moved, so he may not be up and running, but that's his profile, besides being on Facebook and eBay.

I'll be the first to tell you a stock boot works just fine, unless your bike runs poorly. But Dans boot is sturdier.
