Gang: Where can I buy a new, stock voltage regulator for a Buell Ulysses? Google turns up retail sites that are no longer in operation. Or is one of the Mosfet Kit FH020AA kits my only option, these days? |

Most Harley dealers should be able to order it for you, if they can be bothered to help you. Al gave us a reliable contact at Saint Paul HD when he closed American Sportbike. I forget the name, but its posted a lot here. |

I've seen the other threads, here's the deal: 2008 Buell Ulysses 17,000 miles, well maintained, kept clean. Runs good. Original battery; kept on a floating trickle charger. Constantly blowing headlights. 6 in past year. Output at battery seems good, 14+ volts, even at 3,000 rpms. But I hear it can have spikes that pop the bulbs that are hard to detect. Ground was clean, but freshly cleaned it. Headlight assembly all seems good. (No undue vibration.) No burnt wires I can see or smell. I'm very careful handling the bulbs so no skin oil gets on the glass. No other bulbs popping although this last time, a PIAA did go out. But that could be because of its age. Does generally not blow PIAA aux lights — which are wired into the high beam. Put in two new Sylvanias, fired her up, they were fine, high beam was fine. Next day, fired her up to go on a trip — pop goes the low beam, pop goes the high beam. Used several different brand bulbs, Sylvania, Osram, etc. Blowing both the low and high beams (again, without popping the piaas. Your input welcome ... |

Todd, interested to see responses as I am in the same boat. 08 with 18000 miles, stock bulbs lasted 7 years, got a few months out of replacements, now both are out. I have 2 new bulbs not yet installed but I'm thinking it will be a short bulb life. |

In stock? Heresy. And you call yourself an HD dealer. I remember the good old days of F&S Harley Davidson here in Dayton. Owned by a cranky old ex racer, crates of XR750 motors stacked around the dyno, crappy building in a neighborhood full of strip clubs and crack houses. And they had *everything* in stock. And their desk guys could (and did) rattle off parts and tips for everything from an 05 XB9SX to an old panhead. If you called first, they would order it in without taking a credit card and have it within a day and a half. Then Harley made him build, in the owners own words, "a giant &*&%^$%^ museum". So it was then a beautiful fancy high class shop, with NOTHING in stock anymore except leather and T-Shirts. He sold the dealership shortly thereafter, about the time when a lot of the last individual shops were all getting swallowed by the larger regional groups. But I digress. Lance has a wonderful reputation, and the "in stock" statement itself speaks volumes. Which reminds me... I need a fuel level sensor for an 08 XB12XT. I'll look up the part number tonight. Lance said there were 6 in stock. Well, now there are 5. Yes. Once upon a time you could walk into a dealership and the part — most any part — would be back there. With a good counterman, you were set. But the Internet is pretty hot stuff for issues like this, capiche? |

How much would people pay for a device that you hook to your battery, and that monitors highest voltage, lowest voltage, and current voltage since you either powered it up or hit the "clear" button? When it detected an unusual voltage, it would go into "burst mode" for a few seconds and make like 10000 measurements a second looking for transients. |

I need a fuel level sensor for an 08 XB12XT Bill, Please, tell me more of this sensor. I pushed my XB12Scg 2 miles on the interstate last week when the low fuel light wasn't triggered. And I ran out after the exit for fuel. |

P0789.KA SENSOR, LOW LEVEL MSRP $15 Page 81 in 2008 XB12X parts manual Page 74 in 2007 XB12X parts manual (P0789.K) I suspect it's just a thermistor that they have overdriven slightly so it self heats. When it is in air, it goes up in temp by a few degrees in a little while. When it in liquid, it doesn't heat up because of all the fluid. Maybe they pulse it to average out ambient (run it for 5 seconds to see if temp goes up, turn it off for 5 seconds and see if it goes back down, if so then register a "hit" for low fuel). I did the same thing last week, except for all the unpleasant parts. I coasted to a beautiful shaded boulevard, parked in the grass, called a motorcyclist buddy that I knew lived about .75 miles from there, and had him bring me gas. And then last weekend, I did this:

When I was doing a lot of long distance riding . . . I knew the mileage I needed to start thinking about switching to reserve. Messed up a couple times . . but, it was a good procedure. With the Ulysses . . . I've tried to hone the fuel gauge in the Garmin 550 to be my 1st warning . . then the light . . . |

Sad part for me was I had planned on stopping at that mile marker for fuel. I didn't pull off, thinking the light wasn't on. 2 miles and I could swear I heard Lil Red say," Big Dumby". I'm looking at MSR tanks and the TourTech 2 liter container. It was 160 miles either way to my nearest helpers. |

Not to get off on a tangent here, but readin Reep's post made a question jump to mind. I've actually wondered this for a LONG while... Why is it that at an H-D dealer (and maybe even other MC dealers) the entry level position is in parts? Always struck me as odd... 1313 |

To answer several posts above: When I seek transients, I just travel to downtown areas. My floating trickle charger is among a pool of tools I use. Don't ask Lance for parts here. Call him. He monitors this site off-and-on. (Just like my voltage regulator works.) It's better to get gas a little too early than a little too late. I recommend everyone to have a voltage monitor on their bike. The one Ft_Bstrd originally posted about years ago is easy to see and catches your attention when you do have a momentary spike. If you're blowing bulbs you're most likely spiking. That's what mine was doing when the stator went out. I put a VR on it without checking the stator and blew it up too! So please do yourself a favor and test the stator. There are 3 different checks and it must pass all three or it's toast. Also pull the primary chain cover and take a whiff! In fact, do that first! If all is ok then replace the VR. |

I can share code and schematics to build one out of $15 worth of parts, but by the time you pay shipping for all the little pieces and package it top be water proof you aren't saving anything. It would be a fun project to learn about micro-controllers though. And my version would also include a two line LCD display so you could see the real voltage when debugging problems without having to count blinks or something. |

Yup! Its a nice clean install, it uses an existing non used idiot light slot. I made one like it independently (that was part of a heated grip controller). I just ran the LED up between the flyscreen cover and the rest of the dash. Worked fine and was subtle, but integrated into the dash would be much cooler. |
