Someone else here mentioned that his bike died when it got warm and it ended up being the crank position sensor or cam position sensor.

Whatever it was called, the timing thing that is not points!

That's what I was going to suggest as well. Does it backfire? Does the tach get really wonky when it is dying (more than would be expected just for the poor running)?

The tach can help diagnose.

A cheap oscilloscope ($80) does even better. You can do it right from where the CPS lines go into the ECM, you don't even have to take anything apart, just carefully insert some paperclips through the back of the connector.

I have heard of ignition coils (unit) going bad on a Uly.

Drill out the rivets and remove the timing inspection cover and the protective plate.
Get a water mister bottle and when the bike dies, spritz the electronic ignition with cold water.
If it fires right back up there's your problem.
If it doesn't, the search continues.

That's fairly normal, that stuff is always goo. The dead giveaway for the CPS is the tach. That, and you get awful backfires when the CPS starts working again.

Here is a nice thread on the topic:

ECMSpy won't see anything, and it won't throw any codes (at least it didn't on my 07 12).

I'm not one to throw parts at a problem, but cam position sensors *are* a common failure part. So buy a new one, put it in, and if your problem is solved your problem is solved. If it isn't, you have a small part that fits under the seat easily that you could install on the side of the road to get back home if you have a future CPS failure.

That *really* sounds like a bad CPS.
