Man... That bike has a cool history and I love the special duty bodywork.

Don't have room, but that would make a great stable mate to my 09.

Chris,
Hope all is well, thanks for you and the 28th have done for our country. I'll be back in PA in a few weeks, won't get to see Cessna, he's got summer drill that week...

Why are Ulys going so cheap? I paid $2,500 for 98 S3. Are people scared off by the perceived "obsolescence" issue?

With 2008's and up (with the better crank and oiling system) still popping up for $6k or less with 15k or less miles, I think any pre 2008 with 50k miles is going to go pretty cheap. Like borderline parts bike cheap.

And it's probably not unfair. These are great bikes, but any air cooled motor at 50k (be it German or American) is probably approaching rebuild time. Not a huge deal, you can often rebuild them for less time and cost than valve adjustments over the same interval for OHC water cooled motors. But it can get to a couple grand easily if you do it right, at which point, you ask yourself why you didn't just buy a newer one for about the same money.

And it's not a Uly thing. You can buy a lot of awfully neat motorcycles for about $3k.

The Tuber thing is kind of different (IMHO). I'd buy another M2 if I saw one needing work I could do and going for $1000. But I'd buy it as a second / play bike. When I am looking at a Uly, I want something I can take on an 800 mile day with friends and not worry about me having a problem that will screw up their travel plans. So I set the reliability and utility bar for a Uly to be in the garage as way high.

I have a KZ-400 in there that is at the opposite end of the spectrum. I expect it to get me about 10 miles before something breaks and needs fixed. : )

All that being said, this particular example looks GORGEOUS. And it's running. If you aren't afraid to take a little risk, you may buy this thing for $2500 and ride it another 50k miles with no issues at all. And if you do need to do something, and it's not the crank or transmission and you can turn your own wrench, there isn't much that can break on these things that can't be fixed for under $500 and in a weekend. Probably under $200 if you are willing to keep rolling the dice and go with ebay parts of unknown origin.

Just make sure that crank or transmission doesn't go. That's the deal breaker. Though even then, even if the motor on this bike grenaded 10 days after you bought it, you could get it refreshed and solid again for $3000. So your total spend would be $5500. Which this bike is WELL worth in terms of what it does and how it does it.

Good perspective. At the same time, my 1976 BMW has 80k on the clock and I still wouldn't have any qualms about taking it on an "800 mile day", or a string of them for that matter. I would only expect more from a bike made using modern manufacturing techniques and well maintained

However, you make good points about the fears that people have about "high mileage" motorcycles. I'm just not sure those fears are founded in fact. I guess the person who's willing to look past that can get a 10 year old still very reliable bike for cheap money. I think these days the high mileage conversation doesn't really start until 100k. I wish I had a spare $2,900.

Bike is pending *sold*.

Hi Chris, yeah man, I bought the bike from you. I flew in from Ohio, then rode it home. I live In Georgia now. Its been a really good bike, have done lots of trips, I do think it had about 24 to 27 k on it when I bought it from you. Could be mistaken, but I'm sure it wasnt 45. I've done a few xcountry trips and 2 trips through Canada with it. Either way, I'm sad to see it go, but I'm moving soon and we are lightening our load across the board.

Fair point Drhach. If your BMW is an airhead, which I think it is, the technology is actually really close between that and the Uly.

We have been throwing away all the potential reliability gains in motorcycles for performance. Take that your BMW motor and wring 100hp from it at the crank, and you will likely find it much less reliable than a modern XB. The short stroke XB9's (which are a better HP comparison to your BMW) are just about bullet proof in my experience. Even the XB9 is making about 20% more HP than a 76 BMW.

Yes, the consensus on the reliability of airheads has a lot to do with the fact that they are overbuilt and underpowered.
