I need a transmission for my Y2K Cyclone. I'd definitely prefer one that was working well, but can work with what you've got.

Mine is shifting like poo, needs the 1/2 gear pair replaced... for the price a decent used tranny will get me on the road faster and eliminate my potentially bent/worn shift forks.

Aren't they standard Sportster transmissions? If so, it may allow you to cast a wider net.

I think if you wanted new, you could go with Andrews also. They're pretty highly regarded for the older Sportster Transmissions. Probably not cheap. But very good and you get a known quantity versus buying used. You can also go a la carte with Andrews and only buy what you think you need.

I seem to recall that the Buell transmission was unique, but I've forgotten a lot of Buell stuff over the years...

About the only 'proof' I can find (without resorting to Battle 2Win, etc...):
"and a European-spec close ratio five-speed transmission"

If I were spending my money, I'd do a little more research before going for just a like year Sporty transmission...

I may be buying a used gear-set that looks to be in pretty decent condition.

Seems like the gear ratios might have been different 1313, but aside from that they appear identical. You'd certainly know better than me

Big Hairy Ralph has a complete transmission on ebay, that's has the shift drum/detent plate fixed, but I gotta keep this as cheap as possible so I'm gonna have to skip that. He also wants $400.

Does anyone know if the parts (worn engagement dogs) can be machined and still maintain integrity? 'Cause maybe I can get the brother in law to just trim them so they have clean edges.

Edit, I'll give Andrews a call, they don't show anything other than cams on their ebay store, website lists transmission gears so... yeah...

a 91-03 sportster transmission will bolt right in to your bike.

As far as I know, there is no realistic way to repair the transmission gears/dogs.

A Sporty trans will fit and work - no problem. Depending on the year of your bike, there will be ratio differences - I seem to remember second gear is "it". Take into account, like Froggy and 1313, I am amazed at how much I USED to know.

Andrews is less expensive than the mother ship. Last time I checked, by about 30%.

Have you removed your trans and looked it over?

Ralph,

I'm pulling the tranny out now, it's slow going since I hurt my back last week.
I have been tempted to buy your transmission, especially because you've had the shift drum fixed with the retaining clip removed and the button head screw installed (kind of a major selling point, I'm surprised you don't list that in the description).
Last time I had it out I noticed the dogs were beveled a bit, a couple years ago. Similar to how the ones on you part appear, shifting has become much difficult over the last year or so, so I'm sure the wear has gotten worse.

I just found this as I got the manual out and began work on tranny removal: shop manual for my bike states "All 2000 Model Buell motorcycles have a taller second gear."

Specifications Chart shows:
"Final 2nd gear ratio for '99 models is 1.97, final 2nd gear ratio for 2000 models is 1.85"


I bought a used gearset from a 98 S1 that looks to be in good shape, guess I'll see how the gear change affects rideability.
