Thanks for the help you guys! Like you said Gearhead, the problem seemed to get a bit better as I rode it. I think this weekend I might make the drive from Boston back home to Connecticut to show my dad the bike (to show off the purchase and to have him give it a spin). As a bike owner for years and years, and a Sportster owner for many years as well I am sure he will have some good insight on if it is something worth diving more into or if its just "character" for my bike that isn't a big deal. Hoping to get the speedometer fully functional so it stops dropping out before before I make the trek, but if I don't I don't think it'll be the end of the world. Thanks again you guys. I will keep the thread posted if I do anything else to look into the issue any more. If I do anything with worn down dog or anything I will try and get some pictures as well. |

I'm sure that the sound method is the easiest way to make the adjustment, as a first time bike owner it does take some getting used to trying the isolate the sounds you are looking for. |

"By ear" is by far the most accurate method (unless you're going to get crazy, like pulling covers off and turning it into an unnecessary weekend project)! Shifter pawl adjustment is as far as you'll want to go. To actually pull the trans apart requires full engine disassembly. They no longer use a "trap door" to pull the transmission out as they had for many years on Sportsters. |

When I get my new voltage regulator in I will ride the bike around a bit more and see if a pawl adjustment is needed. Hopefully youtube will have some walkthroughs for me. |
