I was originally thinking that I'd be riding the slab all the way to Appleton, but it seems that most people are taking the back highways. So what are the best routes to appleton? Someone already suggested Hwy 83. to Fon Du Lac but my maps don't have it marked all the way up there. I'm doing some research my self but I haven't found anything really good yet. JT | ||

Appleton is about 100 miles north of Milwaukee. That's where Dave S has migrated to from Iowa. It's nowhere near Wasilla  JT | ||

I make that run about once a week in the summer as my chrome graphics shop is in Appleton and I live in Milwaukee. My favorite route is up Hwy 175. Catch it in Menomonee Falls (Appleton Ave) and ride it all the way to Fon Du Lac. You will ride through a few small towns but there are a few spots that you can really open up the throttle. Once in Fon Du Lac you will catch highway 45 which will take you along the coast of lake Winebago till you hit Oshkosh. Drive through the city to the Freeway. From that point I like to hop on the super slab (41 North) into Appleton. In Appleton get off on Wisconsin Ave (Hwy 10) and turn left. Imediately get in the right lane and you will veer to the right onto GV. Take GV to N.McCarthy Rd and turn right. The dealership will be on your left side about a half mile up the road. I am not sure when I am going up (may leave Friday night) If I leave Saturday, I will post a message and offer anyone else who want to ride up a free tour. P.S. If you are closer to hwy 83 it will run right into 175 also. | ||

Yep, hwy-83 becomes or blends into hwy-175. Just a couple of intersections to pay attention to as other county roads Y-off. Watch the signs and you'll be fine. | ||

Anybody else going to start as far south (Rock Island, IL) as I am? If not I'd like to hook up with some Milwaukee or Waterloo riders to make the final leg, just need a time and place of departure. | ||

Easy . . .. I'm starting just about as far south as you, although damn near as east as you can get (8 miles from the Big Water) . .. . my route may take me halfway between the water and Madison . . . . .. . . you? | ||

To make time and avoid getting lost along the way I'll probably stick to the interstate to reach any group or rider that knows some back roads up there but it looks like the current route will take me through Madison if I have to fly solo. I'm about 80mi from the intersection of I88/I39, I'd like to avoid the Chicago area but if you want to meet up some place and ride north that would be cool. I'll probably head out about midnight Friday and stop somewhere for the night to cut the trip roughly in half so I won't have to get up and leave at 0500. | ||

Oh yeah, I will be a personal guide for the cost of one PRS guitar I'm thinking of selling one of mine. (I have a totaly of 12 guitars right now, but just 2 PRSi) But the cost is substantialy higher.  As for the route, I found an excellent atlas today at Barnes and Nobel. It's by far the best I've seen. It's the Michellin (sic) road atlas and instead of covering wholse states it fits the maps to the pages in an overlapping fashion, and it's about the right size to fit in a tank bag. It's got great detail and I've already spotted a few routes that might be promising. It's already helped me to change my route to North Carolina this summer since it has a lot better detail of that area than anything available locally. JT |
