Just got my new Madstad screen (20" ADV) and went to for a 340mi ride around central/eastern Washington. My first big ride since I got the Uly. For the first hour I stopped every 5 minutes to try a different adjustment for the screen as I had horrible turbulence around my head, as if some one was punching my helmet left and right. With one adjustment, it felt as though my jacket and helmet were trying to be removed from the bottom up from the wind. VERY STRANGE!!!And very unsettling, it was hard to pay attention to the riding. I did manage to find an adjustment that had only minor punches to he head, which I used for the rest of the trip, but this is not at all what I expected, and obviously will not due. I'll call Madstad tomorrow but it's a pretty simple system, has anyone else had trouble like this??? |

I'm not sure how to help your situation. But I have the palmer adjustable windscreen bracket, when I wear my full face I have no buffeting in any position |

You need to put something around the bottom of your handlebars, I think. Experiment with cardboard. |

Would some Memphis shades help the situation? |

I just put an email in to Madstad, we'll see what they say. Who else here has one? |

No longer have my Uly but..... I rode with a Madstad windshield. Never had a problem with it. I had it set all the way up and all the way forward. (I'm 6'1") I did have Memphis Shade lowers on the Uly too. These work well to curb the "helmet lifting" effect. YMMV. Chris C |

a tank bag also helps block uplifting wind. |

Did you try the windshield all the way down and top pushed 2/3 the way forward? Some thoughts: I have the Madstad setup--20" shield, 5'10" with 31 inseam--where I set the shield all the way down. I want good clean air flow between the shield and windscreen, and with the shield down I believe it creates this better air flow between the two. As a sailor, I am mindful that there is a lot of power generated from the air that passes cleanly between the main sail and overlapping jib (foresail); creating a strong low pressure and maximum power. However, sails must be trimmed properly get this clean airflow. In the same manner, a shield raised all the way up is like a dirty trim. Air, and that strong low pressure, is not cleanly flowing up between shield and screen. My shield is set so that my eyes look just over the top of the shield. Yet in rain, my helmet shield stays dry in this configuration as rain is pushed up over the helmet. |

Thanks for the info. I talked with Madstad and they suggest having the shield at your chin and 60 degrees to start. That's not working so we may go up a size to the 22", which seems rather large. I've tried every possible height/angle combination. I'll look into the Memphis shades as well, I'm just puzzled why this screen seems to work well for everyone else but not me. |

I think screens work better or worse for people depending on their height and inseam length and probably body shape as well. I have the Madstad setup with the 20" screen as well (I think), and while it has been better than the stock screen, I have never been fully happy with the wind management on the Uly. With the bigger screen, I found more air was coming up from below the handlebars, into the bottom of my helmet and jacket, kind of like you are describing. It wasn't terrible, but annoying. I found that using a tank bag helped, and then I eventually put on the Memphis Shades things, which also helps. Still not great for my admittedly fussy self, but better than it was. BTW, I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam, and would probably best be described as "husky", so my width probably takes in more air than someone a little less "husky". |

Anyone try just the Memphis Shades without a wind screen? |

I found Memphis Shades "Lowers" and also "Fairing Deflectors" which appear similar. Which are you folks using? |

"Anyone try just the Memphis Shades without a wind screen?" I've been wondering that myself so I took my Palmer windshield off today and rode with the Memphis Shades only. Freeway, highway and country roads. The result proved to me that the shades alone do help. There was no air rushing up over the airbox trying to blow my helmet off. If I could only have one, I would take the Palmer windshield alone rather than the shades alone. Together is a nice package and until I find something better, I will keep both on the bike. |

Ontheroad, I'm pretty sure people are using the Lowers... with the brackets being the ones for the Honda VTX1800... but I don't remember for sure. Do a search of this forum for memphis shades and you're bound to find the part number. |

I bought Memphis shades lowers for VTX1800 several years ago. Not night and day for me like many reported, but I continue to use them in anything except hot weather. My ideal windshield ended up being: Palmer brackets + Buell tall screen + Laminar Lip = excellent. 6'-4" with 36" inseam for reference. I've yet to find as good a setup on my KTM 1190, which currently has the tallest Madstad with their included adjustable brackets (on top of the stock adjusters). Still some buffeting compared to smooth sailing on the Buell. But it took me a lot of experiments to find the answer on the Buell, and I have not done anything except the Madstad shield on the KTM. |

Arcticktm, I have the same set up except for the Laminar Lip and as I said above, I am fairly satisfied. However, it would be great to get rid of a little more buffeting to the helmet. I assume you are using the Laminar Lip listed for the Uly and it fits the Palmer tall? Correct? I am about 6' with a 32 inch inseam so it may be worth a try. |

I have the Madstad bracket and had some pretty bad buffeting. I installed the Memphis Shades lowers for the Honda VTX like others are saying and it virtually eliminated the issue. I can cruise all day at 85, it has better wind protection than my old cruiser. I am 6'1". |

Hoover, My windshield is the Buell Touring (tall), not anything from Palmer. My Palmer is just the adjustable brackets. Yes, the Laminar lip is for the Uly specifically. |

A quick question for the Madstad shield users: What shield did you get? Adventure, Sport ?? I use their Spyder shield but if purchasing today would go with the Sport SD. I ask as I wonder if the design of the shield has some influence on the aerodynamics. i.e. the lower wings of the the Adventure cause dirty airflow. |

I have the 20" Adventure shield and as I look at the design of the bottom of the windshield I can't help but wonder if that is part of the problem. I think it is very possible the sport windshild could be better but I have not ridden one. |

I run the 20" adventure and I love it. But I also run the Memphis shades. They really make a big difference. The only negative is they really make getting to the key a pain in the a$$. |

And here I am perfectly happy with the stock short windscreen...even took off that garbage laminar lip that it came with that caused turbulence right across the center of my helmet.. I found that if I can keep the wind mostly off my chest and keep my helmet in clean air I am happy...at least at speeds under 100. I played with an adjustable screen on my f700gs. It would adjust from turbulent wind at my chin to turbulent wind popping the top of my helmet. Again I did better just cutting a short screen to get my helmet above the fray. |

Everyone is different. If I plan on going on the highway for a long time, I usually pop off my screen. I find my screen is best at speeds lower than 75 so if I'm doing backroads, I leave it on. |

Bought the tallest Madstad windscreen available, along with the adjustable brackets, and had the windscreen adjusted about mid-way up the slots, and all the way forward up at the top. I had absolutely no problems with buffeting, and I rode with a half-helmet 95% of the time. Didn't have side deflectors. 6' 5" tall. One tip....go to Lowe's and buy 2 tri-lobe threaded "wing studs" and another 2 plastic nuts (shown) to make your Madstad a completely tool-less adjustable windscreen set-up. I found that I didn't adjust it very often, but having the option was great. Also, buy the first level tint vs. a completely clear windscreen. You'll have no problems seeing through it. A clear windscreen produces reflections in the sunlight. A first-level tint windscreen doesn't. The Madstad owner talked me into this and I was VERY glad he did. Madstad is a great product all the way around.

One last thing.....when I trailered the bike down to Deals Gap a few times, I removed the windscreen to keep it clean and help with aero/fuel economy (with the pulling vehicle) a little bit. I just unscrewed 4 wing studs holding the windscreen on and leave the brackets positioned as-is, so when I needed to put the windscreen back on, the adjustable brackets were right where I want them. |

I generally ride with the stock small Buell screen and it works great for me at all speeds. I'm 6' with a 32" inseam. I have ridden several Ulys with different windshield configurations. the worst for me was a Buell tall windshield. I feel for you with your statement about being punched in the helmet. I rode that Uly about five miles, I literally could not take it anymore. With a proper fitting helmet I could not even see anymore from the abuse. |
