Interesting: a guy at ADVrider e-mailed EBR today asking about his nearest dealer and got a slightly revised response compared to the one I got on Tuesday:

quote:

"Although we have started production last week, the initial dealer network for the new EBR motorcycles is not yet fully established. Since the company is new, it is necessary that we get dealer agreement paperwork completed with each new dealer, as well as registering as a manufacturer in each state. This takes varying amounts of time depending on each state’s regulations, and on the workload at the government agencies. We are very close in many states, but can’t legally announce dealers until all paperwork is signed.

Thank you very much for your interest. The response from riders to the launch of the new EBR is just amazing. The EBR team are working hard to quickly establish dealership representation around the country, and are excited about getting these great motorcycles into enthusiasts’ hands! We will definitely let you know as soon as we have a dealer in your area.

Sincerely,
EBR Motorcycles Customer Support"

I am sure I am going to get an anonymous e-mail from my secret lover at EBR for saying this, but...................

It sure seems like they put the cart before the horse. Why have a big launch party for the new bikes if you are not ready to sell them??? Like someone else said, you need to strike while the moment is hot. If they have to wait too long they will lose their enthusiasm IMO.

It does seem like they wouldn't have done things like this intentionally. Maybe the whole deal was scheduled ~1 month ago and they thought the dealers would be finalized by now, only to find it it's taking longer than expected, or the lawyers stepped in at the last minute and said "you can't call somebody an EBR dealer until this paperwork is completed". HOPEFULLY this will be a minimal delay.

so does anyone know what the last word on any warranty was?

I am half tempted to go pick up a brand new 14 SX that i can get locally, but have read some of the minor problems like oil leaks and cracked plastics. My concern is without any kind of warranty, i am not sure i want to.

I can obviously get a huge discount on it, but i am on the fence. I almost want to wait and see if the Red, White, and Blue RX will be produced and available...

~$10k for a 2014 SX with no warranty, vs. ~$14k (more for the special edition) 2016 RX with a warranty.

You could buy a LOT of repair parts for $4k. You can download the parts list (with prices) at LAP's site. Look at what you might reasonably have to replace and come up with a dollar figure. Maybe that'll help you make an objective comparison.

Blake,
The person obviously has some insider info at EBR. Now that is not saying for sure it is an EBR employee but I am starting to think he is and he keeps telling me he is an EBR employee also.

86,
Yes, it cracks me up every time I get one as this person is obviously furious that I have an opinion that is not the same as his. His latest e-mail said how even Bill Melvin is now pissed at me. Wow, I did not realize I was so important!!

I will say it has left a very bad taste in my mouth for the way the new EBR is being run. If they truly have an employee who is sending me e-mails like this I feel bad for the dealers who have signed up.

The key right now is detail and execution.

As petty as some of the issues are ... I hope folks will focus on the big picture.

This is the best chance the Elves have ever had to hit one out of the park.

Dan,

Without knowing for certain, it's not right to make any guesses. It's a real black eye for EBR. If I were you, I'd not read anything from the guy, send it straight to the junk email folder.

If it were someone of the twelve currently working at EBR, they are risking their job doing it, so it's highly unlikely. I'd much sooner peg it on other more nefarious types.

http://www.cycleworld.com/2016/03/23/mv-agusta-app lies-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-motorcycle-news/?sr c=SOC&dom=fb

So, HD wanders in, dumps a crapload of cash into them, and then leaves... and they are now out of business again.

I wonder if LAP is looking for another brand EBR/MV Agusta.

Its a tough market to survive in.

MV Augusta makes a living out of being bought and sold IMO. I don't think they make any money selling bikes but they made a ton off the sale to HD!!!

You really want to get pissed off? Think about the many millions HD spent to buy the place, the many millions to get the new products -the triples- into production and then the millions they had to provide to get the Castiglionis to take it off their hands. Maybe 150 to 250 million dollars. If they spent that money on Buell what happens? Makes my blood boil.

And the stories of why they even bought the joint... even worse. Certain extra curricular activities supposedly blinded the team charged with vetting the purchase to just how serious the problems were at MV.

^ I'd imagine most, if not all, of the reason for axing Buell would not have existed without the MV Agusta fiasco.

More like a quarter billion, when all was said and done. It did cost one guy his job in the end.

Between the MV debacle and the costs of closing Buell, Harley threw away something like $400M. It's a shame that wasn't invested in Buell product . . . it would have been amazing.

Steve- I'm sure you know FAR better than any of us here. It seems like Buell would have been doing amazing things if HD had just left them alone. The B2 would have been in production a year or two later, the line of middleweight triples would have been in production, who knows what else. I'd imagine producing those would have required some additional funding by HD, but your Cycle World article seems to say most of the development was done by the time of the closure.

Holy crap- who knows where they'd have been by now?

The B2 was tooled and at the 97 percent finished point when the closure was announced in October 2009. There were 7 or 8 durability or engineering bikes running, and the production validation (PV) build was scheduled. If I remember correctly -- it wasn't my program -- durability testing on the PV bikes was supposed to start in January 2010. Production was to be June 2010. I think the intended price was only $1000 or so more than the 1130 had been. I had started to work on the B2-RR, which would have been very similar to the eventual EBR 1190. It would have been a homologation bike with a production run of 50 to 100, whatever the sanctioning body required, to make it legal for racing. We would have been racing it in the summer of 2010. If you remember how well the Buell 1130RR Superbikes were running at the end of 2009, I guarantee you we would have been winning some races in 2010 with the race version of the B2. EBR lost almost two years in that restart, and the Japanese fours improved tremendously as racebikes in that period.

Well as expected I did get another anonymous e-mail but I am now sure who is sending them and I need to apologize to EBR.

I am quite sure it was not coming from anyone at EBR but instead from my competitor and former business partner. Funny how he will not post anything on this forum as he pissed off the powers that be here many years ago but obviously still likes to hang out here and harass me.

Be a man and send me an e-mail saying it is from you instead of hiding like the coward you are!

And once again I want to apologize to the folks at EBR for accusing someone at your org. of sending those. I should have known who was sending them but he kept insisting he was part of EBR.

The craziest part of the whole HD closing Buell ordeal was from everything I heard Buell was actually turning a profit when they shut it down.

I was told the reason they shut it down was mostly for tax purposes and because Wandell did not feel Buell fit in the HD scheme.

Has anybody else been told differently?

"I was told the reason they shut it down was mostly for tax purposes and because Wandell did not feel Buell fit in the HD scheme.

Has anybody else been told differently?"

Wandell stated at one of his "Town Hall" meetings at Juneau Ave or better known as Corporate Headquarters, that he was only going to concentrate on the core business - Big Twins and XL. When asked about closing Buell and the lack of HD having a product to bring in younger riders his response was.....and I quote "I will not pay for someones racing hobby".

What an idiot...

Waiting for the dealer network to get released for the 2016 models... salesperson @ Hal's HD in New Berlin, WI stated they are out at this time.

Love the Stars and Stripes edition......and i know just where to park it...:: )))
