I lost all respect a few years back for Egan, when he said, in one of his ramblings, that he was bringing his Uly in for service, and to have the rear drive belt adjusted. The man obviously knows a lot about his Buell  | ||

^ Aw, come on. Everyone's allowed a slip every now and then. He probably hadn't bothered to look that closely at the bike back then. He definitely has solid wrenching credentials: he used to repair British sports cars for a living and he's done several frame-up restorations on old motorcycles. | ||

That and the fact that there was a spate of bad belts circulating in the market that by all indications suggested it was the belt alignment and not actually the belts themselves that were bad. | ||

Cycle World posted the article on their FB page. I was sad when I read all the negative comments. This is, I think, the biggest obstacle to overcome. While I was reading all I could think was "transparency." EBR should post a comment challenging folks to test ride an EBR and see what the new bikes can do. | ||

Comments in articles are always either ignorant or negative (usually both). I wouldn't read too much into them. I worry more about the positive comments. When Cycle World (or something like it) comes out with an article and the comments are full of full of drooling fanboys, you can generally count on the bike being the most awesomest thing ever for about 18 months, until the next completely different thing is the most awesomest thing ever for it's 18 month run. At which point the people rushed to buy the previous thing just have a dated sportbike that sucks to actually ride on the street and needs $500 in bodywork if you tip it in a parking lot. | ||

What worries me is the stigma people have about Buell/EBR. There has to be a way to gain the trust and appeal to those who post the ignorant posts. I know EBR will not sell a motorcycle to everyone, but I would like for them to at least have the same opportunity as the competition; have judgment on the product and not the business or the person behind it. I have yet to see a post where people distinctively want Yamaha or BMW fail and go away for good. | ||

I get that, and I worry about it, but I think we all worry about it too much. I'm going to buy a 180HP 423 pound motorcycle for $12,000. Oh wait, no I won't, I'm not sure its a prudent decision, based on warranty history, I'll buy a tercel instead, because they are really reliable. Buying a superbike isn't a rational decision. I ride with a lot of buddies with KTM dirt bikes. It's unusual that we don't have to fix something on one of them before we can ride, and then again before the day of riding is over. None of it under warranty. They keep buying KTM's. And I probably would too, if I lost my KDX. | ||

Buying based on beliefs from some random stigma or past belief is a real issue to overcome I think. Look how many people buy Honda motorcycles and ATVs and believe they are the best, even though they have not been out in front in almost any area for over a decade. Buell/EBR latest reincarnation should definitely have some focus on this sort of thing, in my opinion. | ||

I think the problem which seems to magnify all the smaller problems is the syndrome of "the buell hater". There exists a scattered group of people that absolutely hate Buell in all it's forms. They always have and they always will. These individuals are very vocal about their extreme and unreasonable hate towards the brand. If confronted, they tend to slink away only to spew vitriol elsewhere. They will never change their minds. They are causing great damage to Buell marketability. I have never encountered such behavior in the motorcycle world in my lifetime. | ||
