I would have NEVER taken my Uly where I've taken the Yamaha...
A guy on ADVrider took a Uly the full length of the Trans-America Trail a couple of years ago. He didn't even have XB9 gearing in it. Obviously the Uly is far from the ideal bike for that trip, but it's capable of accomplishing it. |

Bartimus, my Explorer XC falls in that percent along with your Tenere...I am 99.9% sure that we have shared some of the same "adventures". Some people need to get out more, or do some research, before they speak! |

I have been off road with a guy on a Uly, he lives in TN, and will take it anywhere a big bike will fit, with success. |

If you keep your eyes peeled you can pick up an Aprilia Caponord at a reasonable price, while you're waiting for the AX to come out that is. |

Adventure Bike? I think this planned AX by EBR is a few steps ahead of the typical V-Strom and KTM Dual Purpose adventure bikes. The target for comparison are the beasts Africa Twin, R1200GS and Super Tenere.
The AX would "just" need crash bars, aluminum panniers, a front cowl/screen enduro type, taller seat and different engine tunning. And that is it. Really. The rest is there! |

There's a lot more to fielding a good adventure sport bike than just taller forks and shock.
Some are confusing "Adventure Sport" with "dual sport" or "adventure bike".
From my recollection, the AX was/is not intended to be dual sport, just adventure-sport like the Uly. If that's changed, cool. If not, then all the comparing to adventure bikes and dual sports is not really fair. |

Blake- The initial information coming out of EBR heavily implied the AX would be an adventure sport bike- a variation on the 1190 platform. This was mentioned in an interview with Erik in the September 2012 issue of Motorcycle & Powersports News (MPN). Robert Dayton, the guy that was president of EBR a couple of years ago, also touted the 3 bikes they had developed off the 1190 platform in his resume on LinkedIn.
Then a couple of years ago, Dane Hoechst said in a Cycle World interview the AX would NOT be a variation on the 1190 platform, but an all-new design that would take a lot of effort to develop: http://www.cycleworld.com/2014/09/03/on-the-record -with-dane-hoechst-erik-buell-racing-program-manag er/
I can imagine EBR might reconsider the AX in their new situation. An 1190 variant that they can bring to production fairly quickly and easily may be much more attractive now than it was when they were fairly flush with cash. |

I've been waiting on the AX for a few years. I can't wait any longer. Today I rode the Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 and the KTM 1190 Adventure. I hated everything about the Triumph. It just didn't work for me or my wife at all. The KTM was near perfect for us. That twin might have a deal with the devil, because it felt evil. Actually the bike just fit us well. I want to park an EBR next to the Buell, but they are running out of time. |

Error on my part. Not 350 pounds for a single cylinder 750cc as I had erroneously typed March 23 at 1143 am. The weight should be (as I have mentioned in other posts) 260 to 290 pounds.
My BSA B50 with a lighter muffler and bored to 600cc weighed in at 285 pounds with a small lead acid battery and except for the oil puddle, set the bar for on and off road performance. With a change in front and rear sprockets it would pull and honest 105 mph.
With a 120 pound gal on the pillion it would handle and pull like mad and was a cinch to get out of axle deep loam and sand (with the bird dismounted).
That, is a basis for an air cooled 750cc with an optional 800 cc kit.
There is no reason not to have the bike optioned out like the CSC above mentioned in Rsh post of March 24 at 6:29. Buy the base bike and run up the bill on the options. That way any buyer gets exactly what they want and EBR makes a bigger margin on the options (and clothing/gear).
Just one base model with a number of key hard points on the frame. KISS, keep it simple smarty!!!!
Suggestion, use your best headphones and set the volume to GRUNT.
If Erik built a modern base bike as this there would be NO equal.
