Cant every have too many heated discussions about personal preferences when it comes to helmets. Just picked up this HJC for $150 a couple hrs ago. Very comfy, has removable cheekpads, tool less shield removal, seems quieter than my Nolan. Has 5 different vents on it, one of them is directly below the faceshield & seems to do a pretty good job of moving the air. Will know for sure on a nice brisk morning ride. Also DOT & Snell rated. Hell whats not to like for the price?  | ||

I've got a black CL-12 that was my first helmet. I only wear it on the Blast now, as I have the Buell Firebolt helmet that I wear on that bike. The HJC is more comfortable, though. I'm really digging that CL-14 up top - it'd match my leathers and bike real well, and for $150 the price is right. Just might have to pick one of those up. | ||

From the ones that I tried on, they all seemed to be about the same. I had to go up 1 size as compared to my Nolan tho. I think Nolan is an Italian company & HJC is Korean...must use different model head sizes. Do Koreans have smaller heads than Italians  | ||

I just purchased a RF-1000 Shoei helmet, very sweet. I only paid 270 for it new. I also have a HJC symax it very good helmet as well. | ||

I'm glad to see a thread on helmets because I have some questions. I have 2 kids, 10 & 6, does anyone have any advice about buying helmets for them? I'm leaning to full face but I'm not sure. Will they go through helmets like shoes? You know, to small by the time you get home. Are there things to look out for? Any info would be greatly appreciated. | ||

I would buy full-face helmets for them just for safety reasons. My buddy works at bike dealership and they have a sign posted that says "How much is your head worth". I’m sure you can find full-face helmets at a fair price. | ||

For kids that age they wont outgrow them too fast, your head doesnt grow nearly as fast as their feet will You can pick up full face helmets for the youngsters for usually in the $60-80 range. | ||

XBDuck.. Full face is the way to go with kids.. The down side is they do keep growing.. out of their clothes. Now, some of the companies out there offer multiple thickness cheek and side pads, these can be used to make a generic shell size usable for longer periods with growing kids. Just remember that your going to have to judge if your child can hold on to you properly and if they are mature/aware enough to know and understand the rules of being a passenger. My first good full face was an HJC CL-10. It was about $180, and well worth the price. I've since moved up to Shoeis and now have an RF-900 ($250). I still think HJC is one of the best buys for the price range. Anybody have experience with Arai and Shoei? I've been thinking of stepping up to Arai next, but there lack of online vendors makes it difficult to find one at a good price. Are the Arais worth the price over the Shoeis? Mike L. | ||

And why would an Arai or Shoei be "better" or "worth more" than the HJC? The HJC is quiet, looks good, is DOT & Snell rated & is pretty light as well. I believe the CL14 HJC weighs 3.3lbs. What extras would the more expensive helmets have that would make them worth a lot more $$$? | ||

I have been buying Shoei helmets for 20 years but recently I wanted to try a modular helmet with the flip up front. I tried on the Shoei Syncrotec and found it to be VERY uncomfortable. I settled on the HJC Symax, it is very comfortable and has a removeable, washable liner. I just bought it today so I don't know how it will compare in sound level with my Shoei RF800. John, from everything I have read so far the modular helmets will tend to be a bit noiser than a standard helmet, the only fair comparison on that aspect is modular against modular. I havent looked at the Symax but have tried on the Nolan N100 modular & I like it a lot. Thinking about picking up a couple for around town use. Anything that makes it easier to use may persuade my wife to wear it a bit more than she presently does. | ||

The Symax is alot easier to get on and off for me as I wear glasses. It also will be better when riding with friends and stopping for a short conversation. | ||

I agree the Symax is awesome for riding around with friends. I bought the RF-1000 it is much lighter, the shield doesn’t fly up and slap down when I turn my head at highway speeds and is very quiet. When I first I wearing my RF-1000, the drag was way less, about two pounds lighter and the venting is incredible. Don’t get me wrong I love my Symax and I will always keep it, but the Shoie RF-1000 has blown my mind. You also can lock the shield. For highway riding RF-1000 all the way and around town only the Symax. | ||

XBduck: HJC makes youth size full face helmets. A lot of helmets come in XXS sizes. From trying on the HJC's, the AC-11 is more for round heads, the CL-14 is more ovalish.  | ||

I found these on the cheap http://www.scootercompany.com/street_helmets.htm Less than $100 each even after shipping. DOT. I'd rate them average. The price allowed me to get an extra one (third) in different size to have around for a passenger helmet (sizing error on my part when ordered - just kept it rather than sending back). If money is tight or keeping you from having a helmet, these are worth checking into. Me, I like the stars and stripes tear-away graphics with my 'merican ride. | ||

I've got a HJC Symax, about average in the noise dept. Great with glasses though. The important thing is fit. Shoie, Arai, HJC, all have different shapes. Long or round headed folks want a different lid. Try before you buy. | ||

Arai helmets are handmade. Every single one! The inspection process alone, never mind the testing, is rigorous. The slightest imperfection and the helmet is destroyed. This is why Arai cost. They don't make anything but quality. From this you can take one thing for certain. An Arai will protect your head as good as anything else but anything else might not protect your head as well as an Arai. You make your choices. Rocket | ||
