So my S3 isn't charging. I unplugged the 2 prong plug on the VR and checked it with my multimeter and I'm getting 250mV and 200mV out of each pin on the VR. The manual says to use a test light so I'm not 100% sure if it's shot. I'd like to try another VR to see for sure before buying a new one or upgrading the system to an XB one. Anyone know if a VR from a 97 S1 will work on a 02 S3? |

I'm no expert, but I "assumed" all the tube frame era VR's were the same.

That's what I thought too lornce but I just wanted to make sure before I took my S1 apart. |

Did you check the stator for shorts? Just lay your ohmmeter terminals across the two pins that the VR plugs in to. You should have continuity with resistance. Open circuit is bad and zero resistance is bad. Then start the bike and change the ohm meter setting to AC volts. You should get 28 - 60 volts AC at the pins from the stator. If you do, then it is time to change the regulator. '99 - '02 seem to be interchangeable. Buy Sportster parts. My '99 stopped charging and the output wire under the voltage regulator had come loose. That's for the tip! If it's the stator I'll just upgrade to an XB system since I have all the parts already. |
