So, got about halfway to work this morning, when I noticed it seemed like the Uly (06) had cruise control. Hmmmm...... I could close it at first, but it was quite stiff. By the time I arrived at work it was VERY stiff and now most of the travel is free play. Virtually no control over the throttle position. Ugh. I imagine the bushing has taken a crap and now I'll have to replace the throttle body? Any thoughts. As a side note, it was very cold this morning (13F), but I don't know that this was the cause of the problem. | ||

First I would check your throttle and idle cables and make they aren't starting to fray on you. | ||

I iced up my throttle body twice. I'm guessing it was ice. Let it idle and warm up to see if it thaws out. Put a hand warmer on the throttle body. Mine froze closed the first time. Froze open the second. | ||

That's interesting. I wondered if it was possible that it somehow iced up. It was REALLY cold this morning. Up until recently I liked in the desert so there was no moisture to induce freeze up but now in NC, we have this pesky humidity thing. I will run it for a while if I can to see if it will help. | ||

It has "warmed up" to 23F now so I went out and got the Uly started. Didn't seem real happy to do that but it did start. Could not move the throttle at all really so it idled at about 2500 rpm for about 5-7 minutes. All of a sudden the idle dropped back to normal speed and the throttle was free and smooth like normal. Ourdee, you must have been right about the icing. I'll store this in the memory banks. Thanks. | ||

It is easier to ride on ice with the throttle froze shut. Not so much when froze open. | ||

I getting really tired. Throttle was perfect on he way home just now. Ran like a champ. Until the rear wheel bearings took a sheet! $2500 owns it. I'm serious. I need something more reliable because it's my transportation. I don't have a car. | ||

I had the same issue with something freezing up on my 06 SS years ago, not sure if it was the throttle body or the cables, but it never happened again after that one stupidly cold day so I don't know of a fix that can help. | ||

I fixed it by letting it sit and idle for a few minutes both times. Replace the bearings and it will be good for a while. | ||

Could be your throttle shaft bending also. Known to be a weak area, if it breaks while your on the road your towing it home. | ||

It could be a number of things. If the throttle body was damaged/ worn it would do the same thing all the time and can be easily proved by inspecting it. It could be water inside the cables but I doubt it. Also frayed inner cables but again I doubt it. The throttle has two cables. The first one opens the throttle and the second returns the grip to its closed position via the throttle body spring. The adjustment for these is on the throttle grip. The first is for the throttle cable "slack" ie the point you want the throttle to start to open. The second is the speed you want the throttle to close. Both of these cables are not PTFE lined and can "binned" due to dirt getting inside them over time. Or maybe they have not been oiled for some time and are dry which would cause them to stick. Also check the grip itself for binding. This is a common issue with ANY bike and is just basic maintenance. It does not sound like you have checked any of this and is the first place to start. | ||

Throttle problem was totally ice. Works perfect now. Except it's unrideable in the foot of snow we have now. Good time to do rear bearings. | ||
