How's it going. I went riding about a week ago , the bike started up perfect , but after ten miles I stopped and the bike would not start. I found the battery was reading 10 volts. I charged the battery and after the battery sat for 2 days it still read 13.2 volts . I reinstalled the battery and started the buell . I got a 14.5-14.7 reading at idle , but when i gave it a lot of throttle the volts dropped to 11 volts and under. Would this point to the stator or regulator ? My bike was doing the same thing, and I found out that it was the stator. Once I replaced that, I had no problems so far. |

I didn't want to have to buy a stator . I was going to go with a new regulator first , but it sounds like I may have to just go with a new stator. |

I used the Lucas gl5 75-90 synthetic crap in the primary. I read that stuff is harsh on the stator . I only had it in for about 2,000 miles over a 5 month period , so I would expect it should not have destroyed it in that short of time. Also , are there any new stators being sold ? |

If your local Harley Davidson dealer still sells Buell parts, then they can order you a new one. I had to go that route, but there are several used ones on eBay right now. |

Also just use one quart of motorcycle oil in the primary. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 20W50. Have no problems so far. |

I'm almost afraid to buy a used one , but I don't want to pay a fortune for a new one , lol. I use royal purple max cycle 20/50 oil, I may try that in the primary . do u think I should try a voltage regulator or not ? I keep reading and sometimes it seems to be the stator and sometimes the regulator . its hard to tell . I guess I should do a stator test to be 100% sure. |

If you charged the battery fully, and it drops quickly, then it's most likely the stator. If it's just once in a while, then it could be the voltage regulator. It's always best to do the tests before changing parts out. My battery was charged, and it dropped to where the speedometer needle didn't want to read the correct speed. Hook a voltage meter to the battery, and rev the motor. If you get no change in the reading, then it's the stator. If you do get a little bit, then it's most likely the voltage regulator. Hope this helps. |

Ever thought it could be the battery. Do the investigative dialogs in the manual - found on buellmods.com - but also check battery. MC batteries are notorious for not lasting long. EZ |

Yeah , I charged the battery for a couple days on a trickle charger and after a couple days the battery read 13.5 after a few hrs it still read 13.5 after a couple days it read 13.3 . that's actually kind of high after setting for a couple days. One thing I didn't mention was that I took the moto battery out the day it went bad and I hooked jumper cables to the terminals from my truck battery. My truck battery also read over 13 volts with the moto off a and around 14.6 at idle . with a little throttle the voltage dropped maybe .1-.2 volts down to maybe 14.5-14.4 but with a lot of throttle the voltage drops below 11 voltts. Why would the stator seem to work at idle but not correctly with heavy throttle. Or foes this sound like something is drawing power from everything ? |

Is it possible the regulator is having trouble distributing the higher load ? I really appreciate replies , thanks . as u can see I'm praying Its the regulator, lol |

Well I have some good news !! After all the replies I wanted to be 100% certain what was wrong , so after retesting everything , I found I made a huge mistake " which I should have noticed the first time" . when I checked the voltage I never secured the meter leads properly against the battery, so every time I would hit the throttle hard , the leads would vibrate and lose contact causing the voltage to drop. I also found out after the battery sat outside in the cold for 1 night , the voltage dropped below 11 volts , so looks as if EZ's streak continues , lol. Thanks for everything. |

I do have one question . when I went to buy a new battery , I was looking for a tx14 or a 14bs but I was only able to locate a tx12. The only difference is that the 12 is 180cca compared to 200cca and the 12 is about a half inch shorter in height. I imagine this should not be an issue , I'm keeping the battery inside and on a trickle charger when I'm not riding . I usually don't ride under 25-30 degrees . anyway , does anyone see an issue with the slightly smaller battery ?. I'm able to make up the half inch with some cardboard, so it doesn't move around. |

As you surmised, cold weather starts may be chancy, especially as it gets older. You just now have a low performance battery. |

I'll have to really pay attention to it , so far it starts with a very quick push of the ignition .I know what u mean though, I'm gonna have to really baby this battery. |

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not going to make that much of a difference. |

I use to own a 150cc scoot , and the 9bs batteries were junk . I guess I shouldn't say junk , they just need to be looked after like no other. If left out in the cold for just a month they go bad and no chance of bringing it back. |

Of course keep it on a Battery Tender for long periods when not in use |
