Question, engine noise. Mine is producing a piston-slap like sound, it's worse when the engine is cold, really audible when accelerating. Quiets down when in cruising along at speed. I had the engine all apart to repair a transmission problem, when I put it back together everything was pretty much 100%, Cylinder was honed out, piston clearance was in spec, new rings were installed and end gap checked. I am assuming this is pretty much normal Blast engine noise? Anyone want to weigh in on this? Thanks! |

How did you adjust your primary? EZ |

Maybe that's it! Per the manual when I put it all back together I tightened the adjuster to 24 in lbs, jut slightly more than finger tight, then backed the bolt off 4.5 "flats" as described in the Buell manual. This sound right? Thanks for the tip. I'll go check that now. |

I didn't send the last message, it's a couple hours later now... I found the primary chain adjuster perhaps 6 flats loose until the magic 24 in lbs was found with my itty bitty Harbor Freight torque wrench. I then backed it off again 4.5 flats. I took it out for a ride. Seems to be slightly quieter, but it might just be me. I went to Youtube and found some videos of people riding their Blasts (mostly with modified exhausts) and all the bikes in the videos I watched seemed to have the same mechanical noises.. Me thinks I may not have a problem...thoughts? |

Bee, Back the chain adjuster out another twenty flats until EZ or Eric get on here to tell you how to do the adjustment by sound. Kenny G |

I think the Bee is cool now. I'll ride it more tomorrow and listen for mechanical unharmony. If there is a better way please do share! - Da Bee. |

4 1/2 flats is way too tight. Kenny G |

Try 25 flats out - seriously. EZ |

At this point I have it at 8 flats out and the primary runs nice and quiet, about like before. I agree, 4 1/2 flats out is WAY to tight. The starter had trouble cranking the engine and idle was way to slow. Real bad scene. I didn't ride it like that. At 20 flats out I hear the tell tale sound of the primary chain thrashing. I idled the bike and tightened it until the primary became silent. Well, silent as these things get. Me suspects as our bikes age the proper adjustment may vary from bike to bike. It's certainly like that in the HD big twin world, of which I have two, and an XB9SX as well. Thanks for all your help. I think I have it nailed. As for top end noise, about like before, however I have determined this is normal noise from listening to other Blasts, so me not worry. After all, I did put this together and I am certain it is 100 percent. With only 1800 riders edge training miles on that I found problems brewing I took care of as well while the top end was off. |

Argue all you want - that book speck is way off and too tight and your still too tight - unless you like changing tensioners frequently. It is only too loose if it makes a box of rocks sound - if not loosen to 25 flats and not worry about it. EZ |

You don't need my take - as it's all been covered - but really you should get the bike all warmed up...keep it running (if need be with a person on the bike if you have all the neutral/kickstand safeties in operation)...then turn in until the sound changes (changes a bit with a *whine* of sorts), then back out 18-25 flats as EZ said from THAT POINT. Then you'll be cooking with grease. |

At 4 1/2 flats the whine is quite evident. At 20 it's thrashing. Snugged it up until the thrashing stopped. I think that's 12 flats for me. Seems okay for now. When I had that engine down to it's nuts and bolts when I redid the shift drum I discovered quite a few errors in the Buell shop manual. I think 4.5 flats is one more error. BTW, with the ez assemble plastic collar on the stop bolt it equals about 18 flats. And they say 4 1/2...nun nun nun no. One more thing I learned about the blast. - Da Bee.

Yeah, the 4 1/2 vs 12 is old news. But it's always nice when someone verifies it. The book has many errors. |

12's still a bit tight - take it to 95mph, if it gets there its fine, if not too tight. EZ |

95? It will go that fast??? The way I adjusted it was the "sound" method, backed off until I heard the primary chain thrashing, then slowly screwed the bolt in until it became quiet. I'll mess with it some more and see where it really is. |

I’m having what I thought was the same issue but no matter how tight I’ve put mine, the noise stays and the bike even wants to shut off?? I took the primary cover off to check for damage and replaced with full synthetic oil - absolutely clean inside and no evidence of wear. Should I keep tightening the primary?? I’m almost concerned it’s engine knock but the bike has about 2,000 miles on it and thats it.. |

I will also state that the bike had been running okay a few days ago and I had even gotten the noise to stop. I put fresh gas in, added half a bottle of carb cleaner, and rode home. Once there I tried to do the sound method but once I heard the clatter and tried to tighten the primary back, the engine died. 48 hours and a carb clean later, the bike finally starts again but the horrible clatter is back. I dont want to tighten the primary too much but everything inside looked brand new so is it worth a shot or could I have caused some motor damage with the carb cleaner?? Super confused here. |
