Am planning on doing Thunderstorm upgrade,( pistons, heads, cams) to my S2. I've read quite a few threads about ign. mod. upgrades (race modules)when doing this. Are they required, do they only come into effect at high rpm, or is it all a bunch of BS that makes no difference on a street bike ridden by an old guy? |

Handy, and better performing, but not necessary. Not a huge performance gain either. Personally I would just get a Screamin Eagle plug-in module or a stock S1 ignition module to plug in. I can't remember if the S2 is 7 pin or 8 pin, but both can be retrofit to the other. |

I did the same upgrade last year on my S2 with T-storm heads and pistons and Andrews N4 cams. My bike already had an SE 8k rpm ignition box on it so I didn't mess with it. Even with the bump in compression the bike runs super with no pinging or rattling even when lugged down a little. Pulls hard, steady and smooth, with a flat power curve and is super easy to ride. A very worthwhile and satisfying upgrade, and 92.5 on the dyno. |

Phelan, isn't the S1 a non thunderstorm engine? 4speed, no problem, always good to hear encouraging words, when you plan on tearing apart a perfectly good engine. |

Correct, but it does run 10:1 compression and .497 cams, same as the Tstorm engine, so it has proper timing curve to match the motor. |

I would install a new ing. mod. You can use a 7 pin adjustable mod from EVO BT or XL. I like the adjustable so you can dial in the advance to the jetting, fuel quality, and compression. The twin tec ones seem to work good. |

In my S2 I'm running bath tubed heads with EVO BT intake and TC exhaust valves, Andrews springs, flat top Pistons, cv carb, SE 536 cams and a fireball ing. The ing is starting to out on me and I'm going to the twin tec this spring. |

Interesting. I'm assuming you're running 5/16" stem valves then? Are those '87 1100 heads or are they late model 1200 heads with a custom motor mount, or are they 1200, Lightning, or T-storm heads with welded up chambers? Also, the '99-'04 TC use the same intake valves as the Evo BT (1.845"), so you can just as well say they are TC valves, unless the Evo valves are a different length (never measured length). Only the exhaust valves are different head sizes (1.610" for Evo BT, 1.575" for 99-04 TC). BTW thanks for chiming in Lance; I wish you the best with the upcoming business increase. |

I like the Dyatec adjustable ignition module. the one that mounts like stock to frame not the one that mounts at end of crank, as i think mounted there the ignition gets too hot. Reason i like this ignition is i can set a less aggressive advance curve. i think the SE & Buell performance ignition too aggressive in advance curve. i also like being able to set my rev limit at 6,000, even though my motor can rev string to 7,500 making power. as makes enough HP & TQ at 6,000 plus will last longer, same reason for a less aggressive advance curve, the bottom end bearings will last longer!!!! |

I did my heads back in 97 before the Lightning heads came out. They are the stock heads welded in and tubed and bigger valve seats to match. The only reason we went to TC exh valves later is I needed new valves and the head was smaller for better flow. I'm with lakes on the external ing but I like the twin tec is more fine tuning. I have found that I need to move the timing around one in awhile due to the gas for season to season. |
