Is the cast tail on a 99 X1 suppose to have a glossy finish? My 99 is glossy and my 01 has a satin/semi gloss finish.

The reason I ask is that my 99 has damage to the finish and I picked up a new one that has a 99 part number on the box but is a satin/semi gloss finish.

If it makes any difference my 99 is a carbon fiber extreme edition.

Thanks
Bill

99 X1's had the glossy clear coat on the tail sections. After that, they had the satin finish. Hope this helps.

Thanks. In that case, does anyone need a new 2000-Up tail section?

Funny story...

The glossy tails had HUGE issues with outgassing when the powder was cured. Outgassing produced pinholes/pock marks in the coating and was definitely a visual detractor. Quite a high reject rate, on such a big and costly part, so something had to be done. Things had been tried, surface cleaning, multiple coating applications, playing with the process parameters, etc. all with no success.

I went to the powdercoating house in Sheboygan (wasn't Classic Coatings on this one, something more towards downtown Sheboygan, but I can't recall the name ATM) and we did some trial runs with various coatings on tails that had been cosmetic rejects from production. Our previous experience told us that the tail would still be susceptible to outgassing even after the first attempt at coating, stripping the offending powdercoating and further attempts to coat the tail. We had a few different samples of clear powdercoat materials that we tried. The absolute best result was achieved with the satin/semi gloss finish. No fallout at all, where the other materials had some fallout for outgassing. Since the satin/semi gloss finish was different than what was 'approved' or what we were building with, I needed to take the results back and run the info by Erik.

I presented the results to Erik, including having a sample or 2 of each coating we tried for his review. When I told him that we had the best results with the satin/semi gloss coating, Erik said "That's what I wanted from the beginning." SUCCESS!!! We had a viable solution to our outgassing issues!

Keep in mind that catchall statement likely on every piece of marketing literature you've ever laid eyes or hands upon - 'features and specs may change at any time, for no reason, with no warning, yada, yada, yada...' We changed to the satin/semi gloss powdercoating as soon as we could (I can't recall if it was a running change or if we held out for a model year change), and enjoyed a much more capable process, with hardly any fallout, that achieved the originally intended cosmetic appearance.

WIN, WIN, WIN!

You'll have to pry my shiny tail section from my cold dead hands. 'Course, by that time, it'll probably be pretty gouged up from the crash.
