I recently upgraded my clutch slave to an Oberon unit. And the weather in Illinois has been chilly so did not get to test it accept around the block. Today the weather was finally nice so I took her for a spin. Shortly into my ride my battery light came on.(have had this happen often so was not overly concerned) I recently replaced the battery and even spent the money for a Harley battery. But a little bit later the yellow engine light came on but only for minute and went back off. But unfortunately both the battery and engine light came on and went off constantly throughout my ride. When I got home I shut her down put the bike in gear tried to roll her she did not budge. I pulled the clutch she rolled back and forth easy. Clutch appears to be functioning properly. I did recently put an IDS ECM and HMF pipe on with a high flow air filter. Not sure if maybe because it was a cooler day if that might effect something? And ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

I also checked the stator for shorts to ground and it was good. I am thinking about doing an oil change. Certainly can't hurt. |

Check the stored trouble codes in Diagnostic Mode. Write them down. Post them here |

Those lights come on and go off all the time on my bike.I check the real stuff and don't worry about the lights.Works for me.YMMV |

Ok, I tried getting the trouble codes using Ecmspy (Was a free version I got with the cable.) when I hit read it comes up with a firmware message. Is this because my version is out of date? Am thinking I need to buy the up to date version. |

Its the software in the speedo cluster. It's a glitch. You have to get an updated speedo cluster or just live with it. It'll go off after the bike warms up. You probably have version 6.1 which is the one that has the glitch. 6.2 is the one you nee. (Message edited by figorvonbuellingham on October 10, 2015) |

Figor - that's Low Fuel and CEL, he's got Battery and CEL. Zhen - go into Diag Mode - press Mode and Select and turn key to ON(headlights on) or Park(lights off, tail on). Right at the beginning you get a list of historic codes, then live data until you exit or show speed. You can be in DM and start and run the engine but will drop out if you start moving. Z |

Ok, I got an updated ECMspy and ran it. Checked trouble codes. Said low battery voltage, broken wire. I forgot to write the actual code number down before I cleared it. I am going go for a test rip and check it again when I get back. I just replaced the battery with a Harley one. But the bike had LEDs from the previous owner. When it first happened I was checking around under the seat and noticed the LEDs kicking on when I bumped the wire. So I disconnected the positive lead and taped it off. I am going to disconnect the battery and completely remove them from the system. I had issues with my 03 XB9R that turned out to LEDs installed by the original owner. Once removed I have not had a problem since. |

Ok,went for a test ride.everything was fine for about 40 min. Went farther then I should have. Got system voltage message and lost power to the speedo and then shortly after the bike would completely die. If I did not pull the clutch in would have locked up. Had to keep jumping the bike to get it home. I am going to pull the codes in a min. |

I take it you're having these issues with your CR? Time for a drilled rotor and new stator. I have 2 CRs at the shop, waiting for EBR parts to come back online for the rotors. If I have to wait much longer, I'm going to have to get them from Twin M/C in Holland. Z |

Not convinced it's the stator yet. I just checked the stator for shorts to ground. And everything is fine. Charging the battery and then am going to check it while running and see how much voltage it's making under load. I think it's an short but not convinced that's it. I tried to pull trouble codes but said battery was too low. |

One other thing I forgot to mention is the bike has the Harley unfix. Read a thread in the stator section, am thinking I should disconnect it. But does it do anything to protect the stator? |

it shuts down a leg or two on the stator. It's only useful if you don't have the modified rotor and stator setup, if you have the setup, well.. unfix the unfix! |

the 'fix' has a relay that goes bad. My CR has 22,000 miles with the fix disconnected. the oil level has always been 3.0 quarts. the system gets weak in slow hot city riding, so I don't. 4,000 rpms and better is what it takes to resemble a charged system. I am wanting the rotor fix from EBR this winter if they decide to offer it again. |

Ok, guys thanks for the info. I do not have the modified rotor. So I guess I should leave it on. Does anyone know a way to check if the relay is bad? |

You can pull the relay and test it by applying voltage to the coil to see if the relay clicks. 85 is ground and 86 is 12v |

Thanks Terry, ok finally got around to running some tests. If anyone has any suggestions they are greatly appreciated. Hooked up the bike to ECMSPY got same trouble code as before system voltage too low. So I checked again for stator shorts to ground on all 3 legs everything checked out. I started the bike cluster said battery was at 12.4 I let it idle for a little and it dropped down to 11.7 I revved her up to 3000rpm and it stayed at 11.7(I do have the harley fix and I know that can drop the voltage) I read on some other posts that is too low to recharge the system. The battery light comes on as soon as it hits 11.7 and followed Shortly after by the engine light. I disconnected the stator connector while the bike was running and checked each leg AC voltage was getting between high 8 and low 9 per leg at idle. |

Correction I ran the test wrong. I reran the test per leg while the bike was running and each leg was running between 18-20 AC volts |

Thats too low. At 3000rpm you should see 45-55 volts AC between terminals 1-2, 2-3 , and 1-3. (Message edited by Shawns on October 14, 2015) |

Can anyone confirm if 11.7v is to low to recharge the battery? |

Ok, finally figured out how to get it into diagnostic mode. These are the codes I got P0193 fuel pr system error, and P0562 system voltage. Any input is appreciated. |

Yes, 11.7 volts is too low to charge the battery... Recheck the AC voltage at the stator plug with the engine at 3000 rpm or a little higher. Check all three legs as described above. |

I looked up the.codes in the electrical diagnostic manual The fuel pr P0193 interested me to the most. I looked it up and it said it was fuel pressure sensor. And says that the fuel pressure high. I checked the diagnostic diagram and it says to check the connectors and wiring for shorts using a breakout box. Found a breakout box on eBay was $500(too expensive)So am pretty sure I can just run most of the tests at the connections? After going thru the electrical diagnostic chart it leads me to believe there is a short in the fuel system wiring or possibly a problem with the ECM. Any Ideas? |

Zhen13: Until you sort the low volts do not chase other problems, Have you tested the voltage regulator ? |

Unplug the Harley harness and try it out without it connected. A quick ride won't blow your stator unless it's already pretty much gone. If it charges ok, then you have your culprit. My harness was corroded and pretty much displayed the symptoms you are describing until I removed it. |

@Oldog, I was thinking the two were related. That possibly there was a short or intermittent short that was lowering the voltage and eventually drain the battery. I could be way off base, but that was my thinking. I have not checked the voltage regulator itself (will have to figure out how.) It was recently replaced.(CE-605) not that it can't go bad quickly. I did inspect the battery wires and the stator leads for damage or shorts. |

@Captjoe I had the exact same thought. But I do not have the EBR rotor, so was worried I would burn out my stator if I left it off. But I could at least disconnect it and go for a short ride and see if it resolves the issue. And work on replacing my rotor this winter if EBR ever gets back up and running or send it out to twin cycles. It does make sense because the voltage on the cluster starts out at 12.4 but shortly there after drops to 11.7 so if it shutting down one leg of the stator that would explain the voltage drop. |
