My little Blast has 18K miles. On a ride to Santa Barbara, the oil light started flashing and power started dropping. Then went back to normal. About 10 minutes later, it did the same but this time totally died and would not start again; there was some smoke coming off of the engine block, but not from any one spot. I checked the oil, and that was smoking as well. After the oil light turned on, the engine was surging and felt rough. It was also pretty warm, in the nineties. My riding partner purchased some 20-50 oil, since it was low (a chronic condition for this bike), but it still didn't start. Luckily we have AAA, and it was a 99.7 mile tow home Now the bike won't start. It'll chug, but won't turn over. From knowledge gained during prior not-working incidents, I checked the gas vent, the spark plug (it sparks!), and replaced the boot (I always have a stash on hand). While poking at the carburetor, my roommate was spritzing some carb cleaner in there while trying to start it, and noticed that there is no suction (hence the boot replacement). There is still no suction, but it has gone beyond our expertise gained from previous problems. There are no oil leaks. I recently replaced the V&H muffler with the same model, and have ridden about 300 miles since replacement with no problem. It did have the same symptoms on a ride about a week and a half previously, again on a hot day, but pulling over and waiting 15 minutes made the problem go away. Any ideas out there??? |

I'm no expert by any means but if you are absolutely sure there is no leak from carb to head then it sounds like a frozen valve to me. Either the intake closed or the exhaust open. Either way definitely sounds like you've got a head issue. If I'm totally wrong sorry about your luck either way. That sucks. |

Oil light coming on could mean bad oil drive gear - inspect replace with bronze if necessary. Check oil level as well. Low oil very bad. EZ |

...and if the drive gear is gone, it will show low oil until it's way overfilled, but that's the least of your worries. With the oil light on and no suction indicates a possible problem under the cam cover (including stuck valve). However, waiting 15 minutes and the problem went away creates a mystery. Overheating can do that, but it's likely from a mechanical problem. I've run the Blast in 115F at above stock redline. 90's isn't enough to kill an engine unless there's other problems. |
