Does anyone have first hand information regarding
any difficulties obtaining in-warranty repairs if
you had the dealer add the "factory" Buell race
kit.

I've read the 'for off-road use only' warnings,
but I've also purchased a 4 year extended warranty (cost me $400, so what the hell) and given some of the horrors I've read here, I'd hate to lose the ability to use it.

I'm planning on having Bartel's install the race kit and thus do the TPS reset -- see any potential problems with this scenario?

Thanks,

CHris

just check with Bartel's and see if they will still warranty the bike after they do the installation.

The service manager at my dealer told me that they would keep the race kit quiet from HD if there were a warranty issue, provided they do the install, but warned me that if I had problems somewhere else and went to another dealer who didn't sidestep the presence of the kit to HD, then my VIN would be blackflagged and my warranty would be history.

It's pretty crappy that a company can't keep a warranty valid because of parts that they MANUFACTURE THEMSELVES!!! If these parts are so bad, why would they even think about selling/making them???

Did I ever tell you about the time I had a deposition hearing & the opposing attorney for HD walks in & has 30 pages of Badweb postings as some sort of oddball evidence? True story.

They do read the fan sites & they are flagging names.

It's not the manufacturing company that will void your warranty... It's the dealership. There are a LOT of dealerships out there that seem to like to use any excuse they can to viod a Buell warranty because they don't like to work on them... Or so I hear...

I suppose I should have asked more poignantly if anyone had ACTUALLY had any problems in this scenario...

If HD/Buell is monitoring the postings on this website with the specific intent of "flagging names," I suppose it's a good thing I registered the bike under the name of a decesased Lebanese postal worker with an eye for fine machinery and a nose for Baklava.

Really, shouldn't you guys be out riding instead of writing Tom Clancy fairy tales to scare the low-brows?

P.S. I work for HD. I'm really a spy. Don't tell anyone.

Dyna:

Unless HD has suddenly inherited the capabilities afforded the FBI by the PATRIOT act to utilize the Carnivore project, I would just LOVE for you to explain to me the following:

1) Fake Name -- perhaps they use the "Ms. Cleo v1.1 psychic name/VIN matcher...last time I looked, there weren't too many (foolhardy) Buellhardy's in the phonebook.

2) General pooled email address -- for some reason "youcankissmyass@hotmail.com" just isn't so resolvable...

3) Given the use of dynamic IP address assignments of both DSL or dial-up, and without a subpoena (last time I looked, this still qualifies under the 1st ammendment,) how is HD going to provide irrefutable repudiation (that is, prove *anyone* logged in or typed this...) How do we know it's not YOU typing this?

4) Even if they can add 9 and 3 together to make me want an (xb)12, they somehow manage to realize that I may take the bike to Bartel's to get some work done, they correlate my name, the fact that I have a 9r AND I like baklava, just what makes you think I'll end up in court with 30 pages of evidentiary printouts as damning evidence?

I'm going to use my Annie Oaklie secret decoder ring, play Ram Jam's "Black Betty" (from the Mullets Rock! album) backwards, and see if I can receive secret messages from the Mothership.

"You want the truth! You can't HANDLE the truth"

Oops, sorry. Must go. My black helicopter ride has arrived.

Besides, I work for HD, remember.

Later,

George

PS..why do you think Blake affords certian individuals the anon feature? Its because HD/Buell & certain dealers would prefer their employees to not actively take part in online discussions.

Do you remember Leslie Hudson? Former head of Brag? Well when she was "promoted" to the Enthusiast magazine her husband went online under his "screen name" & had a bit of rant chewing out the managment for their decision making. He worked for HD at the time. The next day he was fired & escorted from the premises.

You can make wise ass comments about covert ops & black helicopters all you want, but HD has people that do nothing but surf the web. I suppose you have never heard of anyone having an ad pulled from ebay because HD wanted it pulled either?

According to your posts, yes...

Hey, just because your paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get ya!

Nothing but pokin' fun - and in an effort to mess with you, I managed to type in my email addy wrong when I changed it (to make my disguise complete!) and so here I sit, outwitted by my own tenacity!

At least this one can't be assumed, stolen, matched, or otherwise linked...you'll help me change my oil when I'm blacklisted in the dealer 'puter, right?

Now, I need to get my hotmail address to forward to my address bigbrother@harley-davidson.com account at work.

>>>but HD has people that do nothing but surf the web.

So do most corporations. HD, like 70% of the Fortune 500 Corps, also monitors (or reserves the right to) phone calls, faxes and e-mails.

Most of the fantasy surrounds just what they do with this information. In terms of monitoring the internet I am personally given to beleive that a lot of folks suffering from a poor dealership experience got their bikes fixed in spite of the dealer.

HD is a good company with policys that are quite similar to those of most companys including the one I work for.

Wanna have some fun? Try logging onto AOL in HD HQ at 3700 Juneau at one of the "day desks" reserved for visiting DMs.

Common sense should be.

I read Dyna's profile, and I can certainly understand his frustration with HD/Buell and his motivation -- and I'm convinced he's sincere and he sincerely believes in what he's telling me.

However, this is the Internet. I take everything with 50,000 grains of salt.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had the race kit installed by a dealer and what the warranty implications were. I got one answer (several, actually) and I'm looking for some other opinions.

In all sincerity, thanks Dyna, I will take your opinion and add it to what will hopefully be others.

Don't take this seriously.

All I can tell you Buellhardy is what my dealer said, which pretty much mirrors what has already been posted. The performance mods do change the bike (For the better of course) but you are no longer running the OEM stock setup and therefore voids the warranty. Most dealers being of common sense know that just because you put the race kit on a bike doesn't mean that a blown motor at 1500K was caused by that modification. SO, like has been posted already, talk to your dealer, ensure you have mutual understanding on the issue, and if all else fails, keep the stock parts and put them back on if you have a serious problem so there's no dispute to be had!

My $0.02 again...

And also remember that a dealer can't void your entire warranty simply based on the existance of an aftermarket part (even if they made it themselves), but can void parts of your warranty if they can prove that the aftermarket part caused a failure (and then, only the part of the warranty that covers the failed component). In other words, they can't blame a leaky fork seal on the existence of a pipe -- the two aren't related.

(Magnussen/Moss act)

P.S. Since seeing how this thread has evolved, I took the liberty of updating my profile in the spirit of paranoia
