I have a rear tyre: 170-17-55 is it the right size, i thought 180-17-55 was the right size, on the manual i didnt see any reference to this .

Thanks

They are the stock rims that were on the bike when i bought it, it's a 2002 X1, but i have a pair of PM for when tyres wear out.

If you have the service manual for your '02 it should be listed under "Tire Specifications, General". I have a '99 and the '99/00 manual says cast stock rims take a 170/60/ ZR17 rear. I have a 180 on mine and it clears.

with pm wheels you can run a 190 depending on brand I did with no issues on my S1

Depends how you want it to handle.

The CORRECT size for castalloy wheels is 170.

The CORRECT size for PM wheels is 180.

You can go one-up on either wheel...but then you pinch the tire, taking a round profile and making it peaky. Your right/left transitions will no longer be as smooth, and your on-center handling (i.e. highway cruising) will be dodgy because you'll be "falling" off the pointy center section more easily than if you had a correct size tire on there, with the resulting correct curved profile.

Only thing I would add to Ratbuell's post is that you also have to be mindful of sidewall ratio. Stock is 170 55, I have a 190 50 on a set of PMs, 190 55 would have too high of a profile.

Thanks for the info, i'll be changing the wheels son, as i have a país of PM rims and i'll go for a softer compondrá tyres, the bridgestone but 21 sport touring are way to hard dure they last a lot but dont have the grip of a metzeler m7

IIRC, the PM rear wheels are 5.5 inches wide while the cast rear wheels are 5 inches wide, which is the reason for the difference in recommended tire sizes.

Get michelin PR4's.

You can thank me later. They're awesome tires, I got 9800 miles out of my PR2 (earlier generation) on my S2's rear. Just put on a PR4. Hard center, sticky shoulders, excellent wet siping, beautiful transitional behavior.

My S2 actually got a PR4-GT in a 160 - slightly beveled rain sipes for more even wear / no feathering, and heavy duty sidewalls for sport-touring. Put a little over 1k miles on it blasting through WV last weekend - pure bliss, no chicken strips, on a fully-loaded (camping gear and all) 20 year old motorcycle.

Where i live there is hardly any rain, and full of twisties, with good and bad tarmac, i hadmichelin before, but is moré a flat tyre, not as round as metzeler, from my experience with the Ulysses i had.
