Have you tried it Tom? Or maybe a part #? I'll try and look it up, Thanks. |

Do you want something that "looks cool", or something that actually produces usable light output? The two tend to be mutually exclusive. Be careful what you spend money on. I run Hella E-code conversion lamps. They "look" the same as factory, use the same H4 bulb, but have a MUCH BETTER beam spread for actual nighttime riding. I also have in a box next to my S2, a brand new DDMtuning 55w hi-lo HID conversion bulb ready to go in today. I run the exact same lamps in my 92 Cherokee, using the same HID's, and WOW it's a lot of light. Living in deer country, the more light (in the RIGHT PLACES - properly focused downrange) the more warning when one of the damn wood-rats is coming. |

Charles We installed a Buell X1 Bucket with the TruckLite LED 7" Reflector and Bulb on our DR 650. Night and day difference. |

"...I run the exact same lamps in my 92 Cherokee, using the same HID's, and WOW it's a lot of light." Know what you mean. Anything is better than the factory lights on a Cherokee.... Got a '00, bought new and pushing 200K miles and still runs like a mofo....Total thread hijack... Sorry. |

The reason I posted this was because the lens/reflector has some kind of blue looking haze in it. There a lot of different bulbs I can throw in it but what I am looking at changing is the lens. It would be ok if I could get in there and clean it but it has a deal in it that blocks me from doing so. Seems hard to find a 7 1/2 lens, I can source a stock lens but was just wondering if anyone knew of a newer style one. Thanks for your time guys, Chuck. |

You can't disassemble it. The lens and reflector are a unit. |

On my 97 S1 you can disassemble the lamp for cleaning. |

1- Is the headlight bucket on the S1 and X1 the same ? 2- Can you post the exact part ID of the TruckLite headlight that fit ? There is not much street lighting where I run to/from work and of course there are deers. Thnx. Roderick |

Rat/S1owner - Do you guys have a link or the exact model number of HID I need for my '97 S1? The stock light DOES suck and YES there are shitloads of lethal bambis just waiting to turn me into a quadriplegic or even a fatal encounter. This upgrade sounds like just the cure for it. |

To my knowledge there is not a plug and play kit. I used a DDM single i thing 30000 kit and wired it in myself. It took some figuring out for getting the switch and low high correct. It was a vast improvement! I do have a full HID harness and ballast that a fellow badwebber gave me but I have never used it. If you want it beer money and its yours. |

There IS a plug and play kit, I have it next to my S2 waiting for tool time (just finished some updates on my 245,000 mile diesel pickup so it may get done tonight). The non-sealed-beam lights use an H4 bulb. DDM has a motorcycle (single) h4 hi-lo conversion kit. Ballast, bulb, harness, controller, all of it. I have used a number of their hi-lo conversion kits on cars. Same kit, just 2 bulbs. Hook the kits power wires to battery. Plug the kit into the headlight plug on the bike. Put the bulb in the headlight. Plug in the rest of the connectors - one from the ballast to the bulb, one from the controller (hi-lo) to the bulb. Zip-tie the components to something to keep them in place. Done. |

I've also used the DDM kits (non-hi-lo) for the lo beams in my separate hi/lo bulb Ulysses and 1125cr. Plug and play. |

S1owner thanks for the offer, but I wouldn't feel right taking that from you. Sounds like you could use it too! Rat- The conversion you describe sounds pretty doable. But considering the ballast etc was designed for a car app, how do you think it would fare reliability wise on a shakey/bakey Harley engined Buell while being exposed to the elements as motorcycle parts tend to be? |

The DDM motorcycle kit is a *motorcycle* kit. Smaller ballasts (physically), and more robust than the automotive ones. I've had one on my Uly and on my 1125 for about 2 years each now. Doing fine. |

Thanks rat, I'm gonna get one. The stock bulb really is dismal, definitely needs an upgrade and this sounds like the ticket. Appreciate the help! |

I've been running DDM HID kits on my BMW bikes for years....I've haven't had a failure yet. I had over 100k miles on the first bike, and have almost 40k miles on the current one. Zero complaints. |

Rat do you have a part number for what you used As in the motorcycle kit? |

They dont use part numbers. Go to the site and choose what you want (h4 motorcycle hi-lo kit for an old school light; my Uly and 1125 use h7), wattage (35 or 55 watt, I use 35 on plastic reflector lights like the Uly/1125), and color temperature (4300kelvin is daylight, higher numbers are more blue and less visible/useful, lower numbers are more yellow). The site is easy to navigate and has lots of help pages and info. |

My only concern with the HID on a bike is the whitish color temperature which does not stand out as much as compared with a more yellowish color during the daylight. At night, there's no comparison. |

So get a 3000k amber. The DDM site has good color charts, and you can order whatever color you want. I never rely on people to see me anyway, I assume they're all out to get me. I pay attention, because I know they're not. |

I'm getting ready to order one of these DDM kits at the following site: http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/HIDBIKESINGLEHIL O Coupla questions tho: 1. Is it ok to get a 55W version for my stock '97 S1? Although I don't have heated grips now, I might go that way later. Not sure if the charging system can keep up with a 55W system and heated grips. Any thoughts there? 2. Not sure what heat/color to pick. I don't particularly like the whitish blue typically associated with HIDs. I don't hate it though, just wondering if I can just get something that looks like a more normal beam except a lot brighter. Any ideas about what the best heat/color to select? They have a bunch of 'em, would like to pick the right one the first time. It says in the notes that the more powerful 55W version tends to wash colors out at any particular heat you select, so I guess it might be beneficial to select a cooler temp than you normally would for a 35W system. Thanks... |

55w should be fine. We're talking a glass and metal light (not plastic), and your halogen hi beam is already 55w. I run a halogen now (coming out soon), plus a pair of 35w aux lights, plus heated clothes, on my s2. Voltmeter never drops below 12 when running. Idle will drop it some, but that's expected. Get a kuryakyn voltmeter while you have things apart. ANY hot/ground wires can be tapped for the meter. Well worth the peace of mind. I have 2500k bulbs in my jeep fog lights. They're nearly *orange*, and with the factory 4300k headlights they provide good depth of color / contrast. I have 3000k fogs in my ram. They're more muted, more yellow. Would work for a solo light, or you could bump it towards white and get something in the 3500k range. No matter what color you pick, it'll have WAY more light output than stock. The color at that point is a style choice, but I stay away from the blues - the human eye physically reacts most poorly to the blue spectrum. I'll never go higher than 4300k for a headlight. And in the end (I've done this, initially I had a 4500k in the Ulysses and it was too blue)...you can always just get a different color bulb, to use with the installed kit. Bulbs are cheap enough, if you really hate the color...swap it out. |

Thanks Rat. Based on what you say, sounds like I might go for something in the 3500-4000K range. I'm also surprised at how affordable the kit is. If this works out, this could be one of the best functional and safety enhancing upgrades for the least $$ ever. I'm pumped - that stock light sucks. Thanks again! |

...all this, and a lifetime warranty. I've had one DOA, all it took was an email and I had a new lamp. I've done two bikes so far (Uly and 1125), have a kit for a third (S2), have done my Ram 2500, and my Cherokee. Love 'em all. While you're in there, seriously, consider a Hella E-code housing upgrade. The lens pattern and beam spread are about 10000% better than stock. All the light in the world doesn't do a lick of good if its not focused properly. For an S1, it should be: www.amazon.com/Hella-Halogen-Replacement-Headlight -Standard/dp/B000FKIURK |
