Ok I'm baffled, I keep the battery on special charger. Went to start the bike and lights and IC come on. When I press start button it just clicks, headlights go out and come back on when I release starter button. I have checked all fuses and even purchase new relay and moved it from position to position with the same results. I have checked the battery connection and ground at rear of engine at the frame. I removed the rear ground, cleaned all the surfaces and applied dielectric grease. What else should I check!

I have seen reports of starter problems.

Have battery tested. Trust but verify.

Have you checked the power in the battery ?
Sounds like "somewhere" the power is low...

A note from the Shorai guys, the battery should be charged once a month or so by the "Shorai charger" to equalize the batteries (in the battery !).
There is more than one wire going into the Shorai battery for a proper charge.

Despite driving my RX daily, I let it sit on the charger every Sunday until the charger says it up to snuff...normally about 8 to 10 minutes.
And yes, per two different meters, my mag. (alternator) is working just fine.

I would first check the resting voltage at the battery after a full charge.
Then, see what that voltage drops to (at the battery) when hitting the start button.
Then, verify that the voltage is getting to the starter motor. If you're getting full voltage to the starter motor and know the battery is good, the starter itself has likely failed.

"If you're getting full voltage to the starter motor and know the battery is good, the starter itself has likely failed."

Or the starter lead(s) is loose.

With the starter button depressed, try wiggling each relay in the box.

I have the Shorai battery charger and keep it hook up since do not ride daily since work is less than a mile away. I will check voltage etc. as suggested by ya'll. Does anyone know if the 1125R and EBR 1190 use the same starter? I have 1125 I can pull it and test (lotta work) if it will work. looking at the 1190 there is a ton of stuff to come off (muffler/header/oil cooler) to get to the starter. Good excuse to get oil cooler bracket repaired lol!
Thanks for all the suggestion and assistance. If this is the battery it will be the second one, first done by EBR (warrantied, jeesh I'll never be able to say that again!)in Florida during Bike Week, died because of the Michigan cold. I might just go with a standard battery if a new one is needed. I am not concerned about a few ounces of weight.

checked codes: none
battery voltage @ 13.3 same when system energized, drops to 12.7 when starter button depressed, same at the starter. changed relays around same voltage etc.. Connection tight on starter. Time to dig in and replace the starter, this absolutely sucks a m/c with 4K miles on it should not have starters going bad, curious how many have had starter issues on EBR's.
At this stage it makes me wish I followed through with the Aprillia! perhaps next bike will be a rice burner, I am frustrated!! Off for three days and can't ride, it's the only thing that "heals me"!

I had the exact same problem. They replaced the starter on it and it fired right up. Same exact issues though. I posted on AF1 as Another Buell about it.

There is a spray called Cramolin Red. It's an electrical contact deoxidizer/preservative. I fixed a one of my starters by taking the end off and cleaning the brushes and contacts with it. Might work for you.

Rob - Thanks for the tip I found the supposedly safe version: Deoxit Contact Cleaner Spray that I will try.
Does anybody know if the 1125 and 1190 use the same starter? does anybody have the 1190 starter P/N? I sure hope this isn't one of those $600.00 cost items!

May have a newer number though.

MSRP on an 1125R starter is $372.94

Y0395.1B6 - Starter Solenoid Assembly - I think that is it if I read 1190RX parts guide correct. I don't know where to look up prices yet, hopefully that is cheaper than from Harley.

Same starter.

Rob, are you positive about that?
The RS and the RX/SX use a different motor for sure...not sure about compatibility.

Froggy, that's the solenoid.
The starter and solenoid are two different parts.
Solenoid is under the seat, starter is on the front of the motor under the front header on the EBR bikes.

The latest info for the RX/SX shows a part number of Y0383.1B6A, so whatever the A up-rev is it's backwards compatible to the 1190RS (at least).

Any resolve? My SX has same symptoms. Bright lights and just starter relay engaging (click). Swapped batteries with my Uly and Uly starts fine, SX remains the same.

1190SX no start with solenoid engaging. Swapped batteries, Checked relay, clutch switch, starter solenoid/jumped solenoid, tapped the starter ... appears to be starter or starter cable. Sh!t happens.

Anyone know what needs to be removed to pull the starter? Radiators? Exhaust header? Engine?

I'll wait a couple 2-3 weeks to see if what goes down with EBR - maybe the EBR Phoenix will rise and my EBR dealership will honor a warranty.

"Phoenix" - good name for EBRs next model.

I have ordered the starter from NRHS instead of screwing around with the 1125, might as well buy a starter that has a warrnay on it! LOL. His price is reasonable and since there might be a breath of fresh air for new ownership, perhaps I can get my $ back under whatever warranty is being honored. Lets face it a starter that only lasted less than the first valve check is a warranty issue!

I'd sure hold on to that old starter and see if you can fix it yourself or have it repaired at an auto electric shop just in case things don't work out with EBR.

Finally had time to work on the beast! It was a beast to get to the starter. My approach to get to it was remove muffler, front header. Since I had to remove the oil cooler to gets some welding on the mount tabs, I removed it(had nothing to do with starter!) I had to remove the bolts that mount the right hand radiator and have a friend coheres the radiator out of the way to tip the starter out. Once I removed the starter I checked it with a battery hooked directly to the starter, it is not working, I checked the new one to be sure it was working, all good. I will take te old starter to local repair shop to get it repaired for a back up. Now that I have all the muffler system off, I'm checking to see if the exhaust finish kit is available and or if dAdams is making exhaust systems with a suggestion of replacing the ecm. The clock is ticking. I also noticed that the rear sprocket was worn, so I ordered a Vortex 821-41 via eBAY. I wonder how we are going to be able to replace the front sprocket, ghees that thing is super special, I checked on the AF1 web site with the part number but it came back is not available! I did find PBI sprockets, looks like they will make rear sprockets, steel for around $60 and aluminum one for around $40. Now I gotta find the swing arm chain protector and the front sprocket, if this EBR sale doesn't work out, I not sure what it's gonaa take to keep the beast on the road except a whole lot of $$$$ !

^ Well, there are a lot of parts still sitting in the factory; worst case, somebody will buy and re-sell those which will help keep a lot of these bikes on the road for years.

See the link to the thread on Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles I posted on the Quickboard. Never heard of them? They were a "resurrection" of an old American brand (like Indian) that started in the mid-90's and went out of business after a couple of years. Turns out there are quite a few of them still on the road and suppliers have sprung up for the wear parts that are NLA.

Hopefully this is all a moot point and EBR will be back in business in some fashion in a few weeks.

I'll post a write up later.

1190SX STARTER

Corroded starter internals under the cap. Manufactured 2013/11/08-0134 There's a rubber O-Ring around the cap and I can see what appears to be where moisture got in on the front and pooled on the bottom likely making for a nice steamy corrosion environment. The other end (engine side) is free of any moisture.

The new starter MFR 2014/09/25-0237 appears to have a slightly larger diameter O-Ring.

Any thoughts on running a bead of RTV on the mating surfaces before I button it up?

I suspect a bad cap O-Ring seal. Apparently a number of folks have experienced this with 1190s.

437.4 miles on it. Road in the rain once about 30-40 miles. Washed it once with the garden hose a day or 2 later.
