2000 miles after doing a new top end, including replacing the studs, I now have a significant leak, enough that I'm leaving drips. I think its the base gasket, front cylinder. If a stud had loosened off, would it cause a base gasket leak or would the head gasket blow first?
We're still 1000 miles from home. Choices are to ignore it two more days or take off the rocker box and give the head bolts a crank.
Waddaya think.

It's air cooled, so while a head gasket leak isn't a good day, it's not the "5 minutes from molten aluminum" scenario that it would be on a water cooled engine. That would be one factor in my mind.

I would think the head gasket would go first, not the base gasket, but that can't be right because pretty much every Buell I have owned has weeped slowly from the base at one point or another and none have ever had a head gasket leak. So it's probably more about the gasket and failure mode, than it is about the pressure behind the gasket.

I'd keep riding and keep watching and carry extra oil. You are likely creating more problems then you are solving trying to dismantle stuff on the road.

Unless you are near a BRAN stop that is already stocked with gaskets and you want to sit for an extra day (which seems unlikely).

You can hit the head bolts without removing the RB's. It's a 1/2" 12pt socket..
But I tend to agree with Bill, ride it but keep an eye on it.
