What are the must-have upgrades for an RX or SX that's only going to street duty--commuting and backroads? I'm trying to get an idea of what additional expenses there might be beyond the basic purchase price for a new 1190.

PC5 or IDS tunable ECM and remove secondary muffler. Other than that, 91+ gas.

So far all I feel it needed was my Garmin and phone mount. Doing the Race ECM soon with secondary muffler delete, then not changing a thing : )

How's the rideability of the stock tune? I have an EBR ECM in my '08 1125R, but I honestly felt like the most recent factory flash was "good enough" compared to the flash that was in the bike when I got it. If the stock 1190 tune is at least as good as the stock 1125 tune, I'd probably skip the aftermarket tune.

It is in my opinion "good enough", similar to later stock 1125 tunes. Yea the low end clearly is EPA crippled, but it is not the end of the world. It doesn't do anything crazy like surge or stall or studder.

Then again maybe after I get the Race ECM I might change my tune (pun intended), because it really did make a huge difference on the 1125s despite them being "good enough" stock.

The EBR RACE ECU with secondary delete is a MUST have. With the stock tune you don't get any surging below 4.5 k in traffic but you get a hit of power between 6.5 and 7.5k depending on the machine that is very similar to the top end rush you get on an I4 when the shower injectors kick in. Not unreasonable like an I4 but still it can catch you out if you are leaned over getting on the gas hard. The stock tune also reduces power when the TC is turned on. It has heavy engine braking and no quickshifter options

The RACE ECU is like having an electric motor. No hits no steps just continuous power all the way to redline. It also activates the quickshifter cut out via the side stand switch harness which is perfectly timed for each gear, with no cut for the imaginary 7th gear we all occasionally look for. You pick up about 4 peak hp with it. It reduces engine braking and delivers full power on the dyno despite having the TC on in levels 1-3(May be higher didn't test it beyond 3). You do get some very minor surging in traffic under 3.5k but its's no where near what you get on say a zx10, you sense it more than feel it. RACE ECU= MUST HAVE!

My opinion of my RX...currently with 456x miles on it...
Pretty much what Froggy said.

I will also be ordering the tunable ECM, for a couple of reasons. I just like to tinker.
But this engine runs much better than the 1125's of old.

I drive mine 81 to 84 miles a day, 5-ish days a week.

I like it much better than I did my BMW S1000RR...on many levels. Almost 47,000 miles when traded for the RX.

What do you "need" to add...just gas.

I've found that wrapping the header tubes goes a long way in controlling the exhaust radiated heat.
A double bubble wind screen helps greatly in being able to see the dash board.
I shortened the long stalk of the tail light to almost nothing.
And I reshaped the front of the front fender to have the same shape as the front of the bodywork (headlight).

Regarding the EBR ECM for the 1125s, mine originally had the reduced engine braking and.. it was terrible. On the street, I often rely on downshifting and engine braking as opposed to actual brakes when cornering, and the reduced engine braking made going brake-less essentially impossible. I hated it so much that I would have sold the bike if I couldn't have the engine braking turned back on.

I forget--what was EBR charging for the 1190 race ECMs? And were they offering to customize the settings (like they originally did for the 1125s race ECMs) or are they just one-size-fits-all (like the later 1125 race ECMs)?

How's the suspension on the 1190s? I assume the Showa BPF is great, but does the 1190 shock offer a decent range of adjustment to account for heavier riders?

On practically every bike I've bought, I've needed to have the shock revalved for my weight--around 230 lbs in full gear. The 1125 was the only bike in recent history where I was able to get the stock shock dialed in without having it revalved.

Regarding removing the secondary muffler, I seem to recall somebody selling tips that replace the secondary. I assumed it was Dean but I don't see them listed on his page. Where are those available from? Was it EBR that was selling them?

How's the sound with the secondary removed? Is it beefy enough that the bike has some thump but not over-the-top like most of the 1125 systems?

Lastly, is the race ECM required to remove the secondary, or will the bike still run decently without it?

EBR sold them, I can make them easily enough. I've been testing them for the last 2 weeks or so. It's considerably quieter than my hand built exhaust systems. It's also allowing the stock cat/muffler to melt the crap out of my side fairings again. I smelled the plastic burning this morning on the ride into work.

Do NOT ride without a race ecm and the secondary deleted. EBR specifically warned against doing that and for good reason. Don't believe me? Install a wideband O2 sensor setup and display and see for yourself.

Yes, EBR sold the tips. Somebody in Europe (I forget who; I've seen them on Facebook) also has tips and they are working on an ECM solution as well. Of course, if EBR gets a new owner on July 23rd maybe they'll immediately let them start selling accessories again, assuming they still have some.

https://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/models/1190r x/exhaust-finish-kit-with-race-ecm.html

Note on the website says "Do not use exhaust tips without installing the matching ECM as engine damage can occur".
Not sure if they are just covering themselves or if it's really true.

The EBR secondary removal kit included finisher tips and the Race ECM, which did have reduced engine braking. The sound is very nice with a deep tone, but is no where near over the top like almost all aftermarket systems.
No options were available for the calibration.

No, you should NOT remove the secondary without tuning changes. EBR released a bulletin warning of potential engine damage if this was done due to lean condition.

It's absolutely a concern without the calibration change.
Plus, drivability suffers as well.

It depends, I'm 245lbs without gear and the forks are great, they could be a bit stiffer if I were racing but I'm a street and trackday guy so I like that they are soft in comparison to pure race set ups.

In the rear I run an extra click of preload over suggested so the bike is slightly nose down, and I really could use a stiffer spring in the rear, but at current it is good enough to run front of pack intermediate/back of back advanced level times on our bumpy Texas tracks without NO issues(double negative used to make the point).

So if you are wanting a track only machine or are racing you may need to go a bit stiffer but for trackdays and street the bike has plenty of adjustment and responds well to adjustments with stock gear. I plan to replace the rear shock for next season when I start racing.

Whatever you do, start by FOLLOWING THE OWNERS MANUAL recommended settings to get you in the ball park. Don't let some tuner just baseline it like his GSXR or the bike will be a wheelie and stoppie machine. After you tried what the manual says and it's approaches to various fixes, you have a better ability to really dial it in to your liking.

On one hand, I have a hard time believing that the secondary muffler could have enough of an effect on flow as to lean out the engine enough to cause damage. On the other hand, if I buy a bike with zero warranty or factory support, I think I'll err on the side of caution.

It would be nice if whoever buys EBR sells the tips and the ECM, but man, the reduced engine braking on my 1125 was truly a deal-breaker--hopefully the 1190 ECM will be able to be modified like the 1125 ones were.

The only Race ECMs you can buy presently already come with tuning software, so you can ruin your bike with as much engine braking as you want : )

What about the noid? On my 1125, I bought the plug-in resistor that fooled the ECM into thinking that the noid was still there, and then I completely removed the noid motor and disconnected its cables from the throttle bodies.

Does the 1190 have the noid and if so, is the removal process comparable?

My thinking is that timing may also be a factor in the warning. Both timing and fuel are dialed in for the exhaust, as a system. It could be near some edge condition.

Theflesh -

The engine will run extremely lean if you remove the second muffler and do not add fuel. Especially as the rpm increases. The ignition timing is also increased.
The second muffler only has one (the upper) tube working..! The lower is blocked.

Yes. Works exactly the same, mounted inside the airbox though. I ASSume the programmable race ecm can disable the activation of the solenoid though.

Bump to my old thread--how is the seat on an RX? Judging from the side profile, it looks like it's thin and, worse, that it slopes downward, for a "nuts on the tank" seating position. Is it as uncomfortable as it looks, and are there any cushier aftermarket alternatives?

It's just the way it's supposed to be..!
I drive mine 45 minutes (at 75 to 80 mph) in the morning and about 55 or 60 minutes splitting lanes (20 to 40mph) in freeway traffic...daily.
Nice for both.
Haven't had it into the canyons, but I know it'll be just fine there too.

The "slope" is there for a reason... You gon't sit straight up on this bike, you lean forward to reach the handle bars...just like the seat.

Those seats on the XB's and 1125's were terrible. No room for the "man parts.." if you know what I mean.
I modified both my XB12s and my 1125CR seats to more resemble a seat made for the male anatomy.

More proof, take a look at "every" Japanese sport bike, all "sloped" forward.

Mike, I love the 1125's stock seat and I've hated pretty much every sloped-forward seat. (I probably keep my man-parts sucked up inside my guts.) I think part of the reason for sloped seats is that shorter riders have a better chance of flat-footing if they slide all the way forward where the seat is the lowest.

I'm 6'4" and the only way my knees fit the flares on the 1125 frame is if my butt is about halfway back on the seat. If I'm balls-on-the-tank, my knees are splayed out past the flares.

So, yeah, I probably wouldn't be too happy with the stock 1190 seat. =( Sure wish there was one nearby I could sit on.

I'm in that 6'4 range as well and to me the ergos are the best I've ever had. I don't sit with my wedding tackle on the tank though. I do try to rest my pecks on the crease of the tank. knees fit cut outs just fine.

Classax, do you find that your crotch slides forward to the airbox cover if you aren't actively trying to keep it back? (Like maintaining a tight hold on the frame with your legs?) My biggest complaint with most sloped seats is that I can't just plant my butt and expect it to stay in one place while riding casually.
