97 Cyclone 12,500 miles. While on a sporting ride today after about an hour the bike was accelerating moderately in second gear and there was a loud backfire from the exhaust and the engine stumbled if I gave it throttle the engine cut out.It dodn't stall out and after about 10 seconds it was fine and seemed to run normally for about another 1/2 hour and then did the same thing again..Loud backfire and threatening to stall if given throttle. Then cleared up so I rode home. The loud backfire seems to say it's an ignition issue...
I'll check all the wires....Is this a sign the ignition module is failing ?

Not necessarily , check your kickstand interlock switch, make sure it's either new or good, or bypassed altogether. Had same thing, the bypassing done previously was not done right and engine would loose spark then resume and backfire.

The ground for the ignition relay pull in coil runs through the side stand, neutral switch and cloth lever. I jumped the pull in coil ground directly to the frame and eliminated the circuit. The rider just needs enough brains to start in neutral or pull in the clutch and not ride away dragging the side stand..
It seems ok now...I take a longer ride to see what happens.
