I have just bought a 2002 X1 lightning. Ok I don't have any check engine light on. I have an aftermarket breather on. Ports on the cylinder heads are not connected together. I have an idle that is around 2,500 rpm. I have NO way of doing a tps reset. What might else I check? |

It really needs a TPS reset, but you can at least adjust the idle screw till it idles at around 1050rpm when warm. |

You need an ECM interface cable, and a copy of ECMspy. The cable can be bought from American Sport Bike, the old free ECMspy can be found online but not on the ECMspy website. |

If you have an android phone, the bluetooth modem approach is pretty slick also. I have the modem hardwired into the bike, so I can just bring my old Nexus tablet out to the garage, pair the adapter, and watch the ECM do it's thing. |

With the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL(get the PARTS BOOK for your YEAR MODEL BUELL too) and a VOM Meter from HARBOR FREIGHT and you can set it yourself !!! |

The ECMSpy cable and software are, as the Brits say, a good bit of kit. Very useful, good to have. And I consider the service manual to be the best tool in the box. While waiting for the spyware and manual, if it were my bike, I would do the following: 1. Turn both the throttle and return cable adjusters in about 1 turn, for trouble shooting purposes. 2. Start the engine. If still idling at 2.5k, put the bike in gear, hold the brake(s), and feed in a bit of clutch. Load or bog down the engine to 1750-2000k rpm, then pull in the clutch. If the engine 'settles' to a 1kish idle, or dies, you have an intake leak, and need to replace the intake seals. 3. If no progress with the above checks, then find the idle adjust cable, and go counterclockwise, say, 2 full turns. Snap the throttle open a time or two, and try again. If none of the above works, then it is time to physically inspect the throttle cable routing, the idle adjust cable, and the throttle butterfly and shaft to insure they are as they should be. By that time, the manual and ECMSpy stuff should be in hand, and you can continue. Hope this helps, Dave |
