Another tire thread, yet tires are consumables and technology changes. These tires are very new and I only see them at Revzilla for about $350 for a set. I have not seen them anywhere else. Anyone use the Pirelli Scorpion Trail (first edition) and have comments about those or looking at the Pirelli Scorpion Trail II? I am not one usually on the cutting edge of technology and have waited to hear others experience and opinions. Otherwise I was looking at the Pirelli Angle GT. I ride gravel a little here and there, but the bigger thing is back roads in Wisconsin tend to be a little rougher--loose stones and broken up--from harsh winter freezing. |

My first Scorpion Trail (rear only), went 7,000 miles, which was OK with me. My second (front and rear) have about 5,500 mi, but are aver due for replacement. They were about worn out at 5,000 mi, so I wasn't as happy with their life span. As far as handling and feel, I like them. They are mostly a street tire, in spite of their name. I am not an aggressive rider, I feel that a good set of tires should last more than 5k or even 7k. |

I got around 7000 on my trails and found them great in the rain and decent on the dirt and rock roads. My brother just got a set of the original ones for his bike. I'm trying the PR4's next. I have them but haven't got them on yet. |

I'm at my 2nd set of the Scorpion Trail I and satisfied with them. For sure will replace the actual ones for the new generation as soon as get the time. Can't think about any other tire significant better for 95% tarmac. |

I don't have experience with the Trails 2 as they are brand new, but they look cool. I was very happy with the first gen Trails when I ran them. I don't do dirt anymore so I switched to Angels, which also are fantastic and long lasting. |

Thanks Froggy. I do not do dirt purposely. But just a lot of really poor roads. Many roads where farm tractors travel and they get a wheel off the road and kick up gravel and stones onto the pavement. More often than not there is gravel and stones on the inside of turns. Beautiful areas, lightly traveled roads, yet enough in fairly poor condition. Wisconsin is a dairy state and the state paved many back roads so that milk trucks could get in and out in the winter and wet weather; not purposed for much traffic, and as long at they serve the purpose do not see many repairs. Need a tire for these conditions on great roads for riding. |

I will need to find different tires soon and since D116's are obsolete, I've been trying to find a good replacement. Opinions on tires are all over the map, we already know that. For me, the D161's had some advantages that seem to be really difficult to duplicate. One is the fact that that tire weighed less than any 180 I ever hefted. I don't know the exact weight but it was noticeably light in weight. Somehow the tire had a good, sturdy carcass at the same time. It was not a "thin skin" tire. A little easier (or at least possible) to duplicate was the traction. This was Dunlop's rain tire. As such, it worked pretty well for me. Both peg feelers are ground a tad bit to prove it. The aggressive tread pattern worked fine in dirt too. Right up until I got to deep, dry sand or mud. Tire did not like mud. For my mostly-street use though, it was an exceptional tire and there were no chicken strips on the rears that have been removed from my Uly. (Message edited by panhead_dan on June 24, 2015) |

I like the scorpion trails on the street and they do pretty well on hard packed dirt and gravel too. The rear tire seems to have deeper tread than the front and actually does pretty well in light mud. The front does not like mud at all and slips all over the place in my experience. I wasn't actually planning on riding through mud with these tires, but I went on a camping trip in the mountains and it rained a lot overnight which created a light layer of mud on the dirt/gravel road the next morning. I think I would like to try a TKC80 on the front and Scorpion Trail on the back for my next set. |

Dan, I never had a chance to try the D616. Those that used them and report back seemed all to like them. Like you I am not sure of a really good Uly tire. Like to find something in the 20 to 25% off road with a bit of longevity. I have been following a fellow Lyndon Poskitt (associated with Adventure Spec)on his around the world traveling and Rallying, and he used a GoldenTyre 201 that he liked on his KTM 690. They make Uly sizes too, but they may just be getting to the US now. Also some report that the tire life is not good, but Lyndon reported he had good success with his. (He has a Youtube video on them) Ramman, that would be an interesting combination--TKC80 on front and Scorpion Trail on the Rear. Thanks for sharing that. Last night I was searching around on using a 170/60 17 on the rear. Some report that they like the handling with this width size. I do see a TKC70 in this size for the rear, but they do not have a front TKC70 in a 17. Only see it in a 19. It is suppose to be a 60/40 on off road tire hand made in Germany. Just thinking out loud, maybe that TKC70 Rear with TKC80 front might be a nice combo. |

I echo, The originals were good street tires for me. |

@ Gobadgers - My plan for my next set of tires is a TKC70 rear and TKC80 front. My dad has that setup on his GS and loves it. Says the TKC80 does really well in the rain. He's getting pretty good mileage out of them as well. I believe he's around 4,000 miles on a set and have quite a bit of tread left. Ralph |

FWIW, I used two sets of these on a cross-country ride a while back. The rear lasted less than 4K but that with some high-speed freeway runs on 95-degree days. The bigger issue I had was that the Uly never felt right with those tires. Steering was just really funny. I've used several other types before (>60K on the bike) and the Scorpion Trail II had a "nervous" feel unlike any others. Present tires are the Continental Trail Attack II. There's nothing "trail" about them but they've restored my confidence when riding the twisties. |

I miss the D616... My 06 seems to do OK on PR3's...but I have to force myself NOT to make that random left turn onto dirt/gravel/hardpack "just to see what its like" |

Kevin, thanks for your comments. You hit right at the heart of my experience with the Scorpion Sync and thus question considering the Trail II. I never felt right either with the Sync, and even on gravel very tentative. If I'm viewing this tire for its 5% off road capability, I wonder if a full road tire and one that is 95-5 will perform the same in the dirt, but the 95-5 will be a compromise on the tarmac. Therefore, I would be just as well off or better with an Angel GT. |

I ran the Scorpion Trails and loved them. Great in the rain and lasted a lot longer than the Syncs. I really don't think you can compare the two. The Trails had a much thicker carcass. I don't know about the Trails II. My brother just installed a set of Trails and I just put a set of Michelin PR4's. We'll see how each set wears. |
