Having water in the primary issues...will Harley shop in Rapid City help me out? Clutch won't disengage...adjusted at cable adjuster...had a torn boot...better now but Whirrs in gear with clutch lever pulled. Going to try and change out the super milky mix in there and see if it helps. Needing to get back to Kansas City by Monday. I'd like to do it on the bike! |

That water/oil, milky mix is not doing you any good. Most of us use HD formula+ primary lube. I don't know the best way to get all that milky gunk out, you might have to replace the oil ride a little, then drain and replace again. Hope it hasn't done any damage. The torn adjuster boot is probably where the water got in, either rain, or washing, or both. Avoid water until you get the boot fixed. I wouln't ride it until the oil is replaced, to avoid further damage. (Message edited by arry on June 04, 2015) |

Definitely going to solve the issue and replace the oil before riding further. I saw some folks use syn3 in the primary...thought I'd use my spare quart of it. Turns out I only have a third of a quart. Who used all the spare oil on the bike! Off to find some synthetic in the morning. I've got it drained. Just need to fill it up with something. I'll try to find some synthetic non-energy conserving in the morning. It may be another trip through the hills to get some formula+ at HD. It kinda sounds like a dry clutch on a ducati. I was wondering if the water would make it sound like that...not enough lube so it whir whir whirs. Or if its a bearing going. I read another thread about a clutch basket bearing perhaps? Not that many miles in the rain today. Just a couple hundred. I don't remember riding in the rain that much since the last oil change. Which was all oil when it came out. Lately it hasn't been getting a wash very often, so that's good too. Any help on the nearest dealer or shop around the Black Hills in South Dakota is appreciated! |

Boogey-- If all you need is a place to do the work, and a few tools, I live about an hour north of Custer, and have a garage and tools. I'm working today, but oughta be available tomorrow (Saturday.) Yep that was me! Thanks for the offer! I might take you up on it if new oil does solve the issue. I got some M1 15W-50 from NAPA this morning. Looks like others have used that. Off to put it in and see what happens... |

Clutch basket bearing is a good guess. Hope oil helps. Things you hear are bad, things you smell are really really bad! |

Oil helped enough to get to Rapid City HD. Just enough. Problems shifting while coasting into parking lot. Their best Buell tech is in today...so that's good! We shall see. |

Anyone that works on a sporster clutch is going to be able to fix you right up. My 2008 had that bearing go in the same way for the same reason. Mine had the common decency of dieing while under warranty though. |

Parts should be in tomorrow. Hopefully back on the road tomorrow afternoon. Pains me to have it done. I like to wrench on my own stuff! Perhaps I should check that boot more often. Lesson learned. What to do in downtown Rapid City? Any suggestions? |

Boogey-- Glad to see you figured (or got it figured) out. Too late now, I know, but there are a few decent pubs in downtown Rapid City, and I've seen a few different free concerts at Main Street Square. I hope BH HD gets you back on the road today. BTW-- What windshield system are you running on your Uly? I almost didn't recognize the bike, and felt like I was intruding on your group... |

I really like the Firehouse Brewery downtown. Lots of great places in Rapid and out in the back roads near there. That dealer has always been pretty good. When they were at their old location they even set up an area to change your own oil. They provided drain pans and an oil drum for your used oil. Used that a couple of times when there for Sturgis years ago. |

Daddio - No worries. We found some good beers and pizza at the Independent Ale House. The windshield is a Parabellum. I like it a lot. It's the 28" version. I'm 5'-11" or so and I can look over or through it as I choose. Bike was fixed up by noon, back on the road and nearing Nebraska and the Sandhills. All seems fine with new bearings, clutch plates and cable! Thanks for being a backup plan Daddio! |
