I have an 09 1125r. When I first got the bike, I rode it for a few weeks and noticed the oil light came on at 180 degrees at idle. I changed the oil with screamin' eagle and of course a new filter. Oil light wouldn't come on until 190+ degrees. It's been about 3k miles and now the oil light comes on around 185 at idle. My question is, aren't these pretty low temps for the light to be coming on anyway? Any suggestions would be great. |

Forgot to mention I am running an HMF exhaust and EBR ECM. Not sure if perhaps this ECM set the idle lower than normal. If I bring up the RPM less than 100 more than idle, the light goes out |

The oil light is trigged based on low pressure, the temperature of the oil is not a trigger for the light.
First thing I would do is check your oil level, it may be low.

The oil viscosity changes at higher temperatures. It becomes thinner and therefore makes less pressure. My question is, what temperature does everyone else's bike run? Do you have a similar problem. Oil level is fine. I just have noticed that the light comes on sooner as the oil gets older. I still think the temp is pretty low to have this problem. |

While you are correct about the viscosity and temperature, it will not cause the oil light to come on, you have another issue other than the oil itself. Possibly a sensor, or oil pump.
My 1125s run from 160-200°f, depending on the weather, and I've never seen the oil light after starting the motor. I've seen others with cooling issues hit 220°f, having the bike go into skip spark cooling mode, and not have the oil light come on. |

The oil pressure light should never be on while the motor is running, no matter how hot it gets. |

UPDATE: After posting this yesterday, reading my book and hearing that 180 degrees is pretty much normal operating temperature, I went back to the garage and let the bike run and gain some temp. I let it get up to 192. No oil light whatsoever. I rode today, about 15 miles. 92 degrees outside so it didn't take much to get the bike warm real fast. Got back home and in the garage and let the temp get up to 190. Again, no issues... For about 5 minutes. Oil light began to flicker inconsistently.
I forgot to mention that the oil light is not coming on and staying on. It's flickering. I know, I know, this was crucial information. I read the book and the trouble shooting guide says this could be due to improper idle or faulty pressure relief valve. I paid close attention to the idle and I don't believe it changed at all, certainly not enough to affect oil pressure. I'm convinced this isn't really temp related anymore. I am going to start by installing a new sensor(only $20) and seeing what that does. I am however, going to test the oil pressure as soon as I can get a hold of the right size fitting w/o buying the $200 Snap On kit. Any experience working with the pressure relief valve? Any thoughts on simply hooking up a gauge permanently? |

Ok. So, I changed the oil pressure sensor. Still having the same issue. Read through the manual and it points to either the oil pressure relief valve or improper idle. The EBR ECM I have is apparently known to lower the idle. Sure enough, I watched the tach and every time it dipped ever so slightly, the oil light would flicker on. Does anyone have any experience adjusting the idle and know what I need?(Besides a degree in computer programming) |
