I think you should call it Babe. That'll do pig, that'll do. (Message edited by big island rider on April 04, 2015) |

My 2008 does that too. It usually does it if I start it when it is hot, like after I fill up with gas. 52k and no problem starting if I just bump it again. I also came here for the Deliverance joke, but I see I'm too late. |

My 09 just started doing this. The same thing, right after re-fueling while warm. It sounds like I hit the started while it was running. Call it Arnold, Arnold Ziffel. |

Not bad, 2 movie references and a very old TV show. Never heard the term "Hooters" until Petticoat Junction... Z |

Chances are it is a lack o' lube. I have rebuilt many a starter that simply needed cleaned and lubed. I would have to replace the starter on my Jeep every mud run outing if I did not simply oil the bendix shaft and grease the starter gear now and again. My dirt track race cars of the past needed it done a few times per season. If you like, I'll describe how to lube a supposedly sealed GM throw out bearing when it starts squealing from being mud and water filled. On the uly you will have to take the primary cover off, loosen the starter bolts(do not need remove them), push the starter back a bit, give the bendix a couple shots of your favorite motor oil making sure it gets on the slider shaft, a little RTV around the seal, tighten the bolts back up, install the primary cover and such. As well sealed as these starter units are, unless you hit a lot of dirt roads, they likely won't be dirty, just dry of lubrication. |

I'm glad someone posted this one. My 08xt has done this since I got it with only 2000 miles on it. Never left me stranded but but it is a bit unsettling when the beast makes noises that I don't understand. Mine is sometimes a screech and sometimes a grind when its really hot after refueling. The lubrication thing makes sense if the solenoid isn't completely disengaging, and then I guess that would explain the sometimes grind in addition to the screech. Just hoping it last until I have enough saved for a nice FJR1300...then it will either be restored and put in storage, or parted out...haven't decided which. |

The word squeals just reminds me of a minion that says bottom! LOL! anyhow, as a machinist, millwright of 40 plus years, I always say if you want to keep it right, you'll keep it wet! whether a bit of grease or oil or whatever! adapt that to your personal life in all facets! I checked with grandboy before using the minion thing! |

@sagehawk: nope. haven't really been looking but if my uly starts giving me maintenance headaches then I'll be more motivated to move up my timetable. re: keeping it right and keeping it wet...not even gonna go there. LMAO |

Welp! Seems like I'm on the same boat. My 2008 always cranked over slow but today at work, it squealed like a piggy too. How much of the guts are accessible without removing the whole thing? |

I recently replaced my starter and I really don't see anyway of getting at the internals without removing it. It's really tight in there. |

Understood. I will hopefully dig into this Saturday. Already took the plastic bits off to look it over. Can it be wiggled out without messing with the oil line? |

You have to remove the upper oil line. I loosened the nut where it connects toward the front of the bike but was later informed you simply unclip it. In order to remove the starter, you need to remove the primary cover because it's bolted on from that side. The lower bolt won't come all the way out because it hits the gear, but that's normal. If you're like me, you'll swear a lot both removing and replacing it. Don't be like me. |

When I say "remove the oil line" I mean detach it from the front. It'll flex, you don't have to actually remove it. You'll see what I mean. |

That oil line clip is like a cheat code! I got it out ok on monday. I'm glad I practiced my swearing ahead of time I'll try to open it up next and document what I find. |

I popped the solenoid open and found the ring was pretty chewed as well as the two stationary contacts. I'm thinking that I can just clean it up with a file or maybe even just flip that ring over. Is that solenoid ring removable? I can't puzzle it out. |

I don't know but as much of a PITA that thing is to put in and take out, I might just replace it with new. Amazon's got 'em for like 135...but hey, I'm always willing to spend other people's money. |

if yall are talking about the copper contact washer as the ring, I have flipped mine around once and next , I machined each side a small amount. of course next time its service life is bout gone so replacement is gonna happen. pretty fair for 19 years of service. |
