Lately the gauges in the instrument cluster on my Uly 08 are doing a full sweep, just like when you turn on the ignition. It's doing this even if the ignition is completely off. It's pretty random, and hard to replicate, sometimes it does it sometimes it don't. And about half of the times I turn on the ignition, the trip meters & clock has zeroed. I feel pretty sure there got to be something broken / poor contact in the steering neck, and I remember reading something in here with a fix for a three-way cable splice in this area? I've searched and searched but can't find the back the thread. Anyone remember seeing this, or had similar problem...? |

I had this happen on my '06. Most folks have a ground wire break, that's the 3 way. My bike, being "special"...decided to break somewhere else. My break was in the battery + lead to the cluster. Pull the flyscreen, lights, horn, and gauges so all the wires hang loose and are readily accessible. Then grab a multimeter, test light, and wiring diagram...and start the wiggle testing. I found mine with the test light because I could literally SEE the circuit open as I turned the bars from side to side. |

What Rat says. You could also wiggle the wires whilst watching the meter needles. |

There are 3 wires going to ground on the neck. Once you have done what Rat said you will see the screw on the lower end of the neck, right in front. Check these ground wires first as they are usually the culprits. If they are OK then proceed with all the other wires. |

The only problem with waiting for needle sweep is, that's not when contact is lost. Its when power comes BACK. You could have lost it three, or eight, or twenty wiggles ago and all you see is when it comes back on. 2 days looking for the sweep. Less than an hour with the test lite. |

Also could be the ignition switch ... I had a similar problem, checked the wiring by the steering neck (even rewired some of it just because) but it didn't solve my problem. Wiggled the ignition switch and was able to reproduce it. Probably should have done that first. |

I also have had that ground on the steering neck break a couple times. |

Mystery solved, turns out it had been a "qualified" motorcycle electrician messing around with her at one time... Soldered and fixed. Thanks for all tips!
