Other than using a brass brush on a Dremel tool, any suggestions? (Message edited by Buelldualsport on April 25, 2015) |

I've used a dremel with a wire wheel for bolts with old locktite... Then brake cleaner so that there is no residue when reassembling with new locktite |

just curious. why do you want to remove the old locktite? I only ask because running a tap down the hole might remove some of the threads and make for a looser fit. In my experience the old locktite looks messy but isn't a hindrance to putting things back together. I do use MEK on a Qtip to clean the loose junk out of a bolt hole and to wipe bolts off if there is to much old stuff sticking around. |

If your tap removes material that should be there, throw away the tap. Seriously. |

To get correct torque in any situation you must remove the old locktight and have clean threads. You can use a tap or die but they are not really for that purpose a thread chaser is used to clean the threads. |

One thing I've used to clean thread holes of locktite is a gun bore brush of the appropriate caliber. Just bring a bolt to the sporting good/gun store and find one that is heavier brass and big enough in diameter to go all the way to the thread root and slightly more so the bristles flex. Chuck it in a cordless drill and have at it. Works like a charm. I used this for the first time long ago to clean up head "bolts". Short blind holes are a bit tougher but it will still work. |
