I have an intermittent speedo issue where it goes to 0 while riding on my 09 1125CR. I found the VSS behind the cover next to the clutch. the connection was good there. I am trying to find a picture of where it plugs into the harness. I want to check this and put some electrical grease on it to see if that helps, before buying a new $80 sensor. the service manual is a close up, but hard to tell where it is. any help is appreciated. | ||

Same exact thing happening to me currently. About to order a new VSS from Al. Take the small black airflow guide off the right side (#27 Torx) and the speed sensor is held on by a single hex head machine screw just behind the cover. Pull it straight up out of the engine case (it's friction fit after the screw is removed). Wipe it off and reinstall and check the connector before you replace it with a new one. 10 minute swap if need be. Its electrical plug is under the seat on the left side of the bike where the main harness runs: it's a triangular, 3-pole, grey Deutsch connector (couple cable ties holding it to the main harness on the way down to the sensor). If you have the H-D stator fix relay installed, it's up in the bundle near the front of the seat area to the left, by the larger grey Deutsch connector for the stator (four yellow wires). thanks, that's what i was looking for. I assume failure of the VSS would mean it would be at 0 all the time. that's why i wanted to check connection first. it seems to happen when jarred in some way (trailering or bumps in road). Thanks again for the fast response. | ||

Yeah zero at all times. CHECK YOUR brake light FIRST. Sorry, that troubleshooting step slipped my mind. When your brake light goes out, the speedo will also drop out to let you know the brake light's out. If your fuse is blown, replace it and everything should come back. | ||

Had the same issue, intermittent 0 on speedo, generally heat related. New VSS fixed the problem for me. | ||

Happened to me too. I could usually pull the clutch and let the RPM's drop and cost for a bit and get it to pick back up. Also in a pinch you can pull it and give it a wipe, some times gunk effects it. But I did eventually replace mine. | ||

I pulled the VSS and cleaned it off. Reinstalled and did 500 miles this last weekend in the Smokey Mountains with no issues. thanks all for the help with this. | ||

Glad you're back to ticking miles on the odometer. It's kind of funny: I've logged about 300 miles since my VSS went out, and it read zero that whole time. Now, right after I order a new one from Al (since the remove and clean method didn't bring it back) it reads between 200–350 mph no matter what speed I'm going, even stopped. My odometer will probably read the right amount of miles after it's all said and done! Almost wanted to record it, made me chuck watching the speed readout go crazy jumping all over, watching a mile added to the odo about every 50 yards. |
