I pulled apart my race muffler to have it ceramic coated to match the header pipe and low and behold in both end caps there is what seems to be fire caulk. It is definitely silicone based because it was still very flexible/pliable when I removed it. Now that I'm ready to put it back together is it needed?? I do have some fire caulk that we typically use in the construction industry but it is not silicone based and the stuff I have expands when heat or fire is applied. I did pick up some silicone that is a heat stop that is also used in the construction industry but it only is rated for 500deg. Keep in mind that I ran this muffler for two seasons (no, not you steve) with the packing completely gone......and the fire stop material that I removed was not burned or brittle.......Opinions?? I did replace the packing with the American Sportbike kit last year to control the volume some, and will put a new kit in now......but do I need the fire stop?? It is high temp red silicone. I used it in mine when I repacked it a couple weeks ago. | ||

OLD SCHOOL: For "SAFETY" you want to attach the front of the muffler so that if it comes off or breaks, the front of the muffler will not drop to the road way !!! ATTACHMENT Class 101, just PM me for a copy ... | ||

...and this (easily-reproduced) recall kit did just that. Torco clamp, cable with two eyelets, bolted to a primary bolt.  |
