With 68,000 miles and a less than stellar dyno (76 RWHP) on my basically stock '06 Uly, I decided to bring my Uly up to snuff. Going to do an NRHS 1250 kit, headwork, race ecm, K&N filter and air box mod, and some sort of exhaust change. Pistons and filter are not in stock so I have them on order. I have a spare set of XB heads that I'll be repairing the exhaust studs and then prepping so I can do the conversion in a day. The stock Uly heads will be prepped and repurposed to the S2. Should make for a much more fun commuter! (Message edited by phelan on March 17, 2015) |

Any way you can put in Sportster gearing while you are at it? Lower first gear and higher 5th. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on March 17, 2015) |

Not opening the cases so that's not going to happen this time around, though not a bad idea at all. That's actually a be good idea. I've contemplated both ends of the spectrum- having a 61t rear pulley made for more highway use, but that would ruin the in)town riding; or switching to XB9 primary gearing, but that would ruin highway use. It seems I actually want exactly what you mention- a shorter first and taller 5th. |

switching to XB9 primary gearing, but that would ruin highway use The guys that have done it claim negligible effect at normal cruising speeds (~70-80 MPH). Cruising in 4th gear with stock gearing gives close to the same overall ratio as XB9 primary in 5th gear, if you want to test it out before making the switch. |

Cruising speeds on the highway here are usually 80-90 MPH to flow with traffic. I'm constantly short a gear on the highway it seems. |

doing the 9 gearing didn't hamper highway speeds at all...she'll still cruise at 100 all day |

I wasn't sure about the 9 conversion myself, but when I ended up with a complete, free 9 primary...I tried it out. It's nice. I do keep trying to click up into a top gear that isn't there...but the bike doesn't complain, and the revs actually help me keep my speeds this side of plaid. At least, that's my rationale because it IS a lot more fun in the twisties this way! |

I heard the lower 1st and a new overdrive 6th gear are on the 2016 ULYcorn, a most mythical creature. I crack my self up sometimes. |

I just put a 1250 kit in my 2007 after 51K miles. I had a leak from the oil passage on my rear cylinder or I probably wouldn't have torn it down, but I'm glad I did. The intake valve ports were full of carbon, the valves needed lapped, and the rings were worn beyond spec. Last week was the first week after the break-in miles. The front wheel is definitely coming up easy now and I'm still dialing in the fuel maps. I'll probably need a new belt in a few months. |

Kyle, Good job. Just think how much easier it will be when all we have to deal with is an electric motor, no valves or fuel pumps or mufflers. |

Kyle, that's exactly why I want to do mine. 68,000 miles and the dyno results imply to me that it would definitely wake up the bike. I can imagine what the valves will look like. |

Got a 96 road king and had pinging i fought for a half year. Finally, tore thing apart and it was carboned up that bad. Gold spots on piston crown and head that matched. Carbon was hitting carbon. Valves were thin out on edges to point of replacement only. Werent grindable. This was 47000 miles on clock. Im of the opinion with todays fuels, just lift the cylinders n heads every 40000 miles. |

I was surprised that Ross' bike had so little power. My 03 XB9R did 78hp. I ran my 09 Uly on the same dyno a couple of years back. She had around 20k(36k now) and put up 89hp and ~80ft-lb. Still, 76hp is more than an FLH off the showroom... Z |

Jeeze. My 2008 has a little over 50,000 on it and I'm afraid to look. (So I won't!) |

It has begun! I got the motor rotated yesterday, hopefully today I'll have time to pull the top end. I'm also changing to NRHS CAT3 cams. Going with a 10* angled squish band and matching pistons instead of the XB12 pistons, as both end up with the same CR but the 10* piston/chamber combo is a more efficient design.

Slightly off topic but what brand wheel chock is that and how do you like it? |

I like it, but tbh I have no idea the brand. It's Dan wheel chock; it just happened to be available for this project. We have several chocks and lifts here at the shop but almost all of them are full! Lol |

what actually do you intend the squish band to be? Measurement that is. |

.030". I have more updates but I'm going to wait and start a new thread in a few days . |

Im interested in keeping up with your build for sure. How much mileage are you shooting for without decarboning the top end? That .03" is awfully tight for a street motor. I don't know of anyone that has run that upper end setup with a 10* squish tho. I set up 96 road king with 037" on front and .039" on rear. heads milled .040. Barely 35,000 on this build and I already suspect Im out of room in the combustion chamber. These are stock heads , cylinders , and pistons still. |

That Road King has a bit more stroke and expansion than the Uly I'm sure. There wasn't .030" worth of carbon on the squish after 69,000 miles, so I'm not too worried about it for a good while. I don't even think there was .015" in carbon. As long as its running clean and not too fat, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. |

Just curious, you left the belt on, how are you going to rotate the pistons to TDC to pull the rocker boxes off? |

Nope, just took the allens off first, then the 7/16", then the 1/2" bolts slowly, alternating each every couple turns. |
