This is the only official word I've seen in print from EBR, a quote from Gary Pietruszewski, VP for global sales at Erik Buell Racing (EBR):
quote:ae: Lately, we’ve been rather good at guessing. When we learned that KTM was about to dish out a bike called 1050 Adventure, we just said “well, here comes a road-focused Adventure with cast wheels”. Are we making the right guess for the upcoming EBR 1190AX? GP: The AX is still in our product plans, we haven’t gotten to that point yet, but it’s going to be designed as a combination of street and some off-road riding. ae: So we guessed right, again! GP: Yes, haha, congratulations! ae: Is there any certainty related to the 1190AX, as in where it will arrive? GP: No, but it won’t be in 2015. It’s in our plans after that, but we don’t have any exact date for it. So far the focus is on middleweights and the low-cc.
So, at least according to the VP of global sales at EBR, "it won't be in 2015". Source of quote: http://www.autoevolution.com/news/erik-buell-racin g-vp-exclusive-interview-ebr-plans-to-conquer-euro pe-with-lower-prices-88702.html |

It's a myth. They are too busy creating the new V-4 engine to fiddle around with the AX. |

What bothers me is that Gary didn't react to the 1190 part of 1190AX. I've seen comments from Court and someone from EBR saying the AX WON'T be an 1190. Hugh, got another bag of popcorn? Z |

I hope 2016 or I'm going to have to go to KTM. 06 Uly has been great but getting old and tired like me. |

Yea, either he just didn't bother to correct the interviewer or Gary's just not that into the technicalities of their models. Of course, maybe Gary was being clever: the 1190AX won't be introduced this year, but the 925AX (or whatever) will be. The 1190AX will come out in ~2016.

Wait, did Gary just mention their current focus is on middleweights? Does this mean we're getting the Hastur soon (or at least it will get made in some way)? Or are the RX/SX middleweights to them? |

V4? Seriously? It wouldn't surprise me. Of course, based on Court's posts about what the EBR engineering staff is doing, it's probably for the new Ford that's coming out this fall. |

The V-4 thing is pure horse nuggets. EBR clearly needs more horsepower to win in WSBK, and a V-4 would be one way to get there. I'm not saying they are working on a V-4, but I wouldn't be hugely surprised to find out they are. |

They do need more power, but Canepa did qualify in 6th today (or was it yesterday).. |

...and Erik has ALWAYS - let me repeat - A-L-W-A-Y-S - built and loved twins (the exception being, obviously, the 2-stroke RW750 square-four). I would be VERY surprised to see anything with more than two cylinders in an EBR motorcycle. |

^ Canepa was 6th in FP1. All those guys start behind the guys in FP2. Canepa starts in 16th tomorrow. Not bad, and hopefully they'll do better as the season goes on, but if EBR's serious about eventually winning races, I'll bet they're working on a new engine design. |

Erik has said publicly that he's not married to v twins. He used them because they were available and make good power on the street. In that interview he said a triple would be neat. I would not be shocked at all to see a v4. |

Naw; they should build a radial engine and put it in the front wheel like Megola did. |

A V4 would be really cool, but expecting to see one prior to 2022 or well beyond is crazy. They've got a V-Twin that's in its infancy and scoring points in WSBK. Expect to see that engine developed and refined - perhaps fairly drastically if necessary - a 1200 V-Twin is capable of competing. Desmo isn't magic, it's just engineering. Expect some cool new things in lower displacements - and I think we can get clues to what's coming by paying attention to Hero's concept bikes. But get used to the 1200 cc V-Twin because I strongly suspect it will be the large displacement option for a very long time. |

Short of increasing RPM, I don't know where they're going to get enough power to compete with the inline fours. If they ever do catch up, they may find that the goalposts have been moved. Other manufacturers continue to develop too. |

^ Two things the Ducatis have to get more RPM than the EBR are an extremely over-square bore/stroke ratio and Desmodromic valves. It wouldn't be difficult to change bore/stroke proportions for the ET-V2, but this would no doubt make a worse street bike engine. On the other hand, I wonder how close they are to the limits on the valve train? Short of going Desmo, how much more can they do to improve it? 5-valves instead of 4? |

"but this would no doubt make a worse street bike engine" Homologated race kit? |

Homologated race kit? That seems like the ideal solution if the rules allow it. I guess the alternative would be something like an 1190RR with a revised engine, but then you have to make 1000 of those which would be another huge expense. |

Somewhat back on the topic of this thread, it's been mentioned several times by Court and possibly others that EBR has never referred to the AX as the 1190AX. EBR Australia's webpage still refers to the 1190AX: http://www.erikbuellracing.com.au/1190ax/ If the AX isn't going to be an 1190, somebody should tell them. BTW, EBR Australia's website seems to look much better than the US version. I love that shot of the 1190RX. http://www.erikbuellracing.com.au |
