http://www.westcoastelite.com/images/bike.jpg There is a pic of my bike, from day one the rear header has always been a heated color. Why dont both change colors, how can I keep them from doing that? I am about to put a new header on my bike (Race kit Header) and I would like to try and keep the header from changing color! Any tips? edited by wceviper on April 01, 2004 | ||

Your rear cylinder is running a bit hot or lean I should say. That said you will never prevent discoloration unless you ceramic coat the header. I don't think the ceramic coating turns color. BTW, very nice X1 you have there. Regards Mike | ||

Use exhaust header wrap (tape)? My headers look exactly like those. Mike | ||

It's supposed to look like that. In time, even your front will look like that as well. The color shows that you ride your bike. Pretty, ain't it? | ||

I rejetted my bike pretty soon after I got it and the headpipes have retained their original color. Only the first inch of the rear pipe has slightly discolored. I run in a pretty hot - 100 degree - environment too. | ||

Thanks for feedback, after I get everything on my bike I will post a new pic. Right now it has a powder coated tail, matches nice. I guest I will just have enjoy the color  not that I didnt before. | ||

My bike has a ceramic coated header. It's flat grey and will not change. JT | ||

My header on my M2 is ceramic coated silver.It has dulled slightly on the rear cylinder about the first 6 inches or so. | ||

Wceviper, if you take steel wool, first #000 and use mothers chrome polish, rub briskly..take 30 40 minutes to do the header the first time, then 20 min or so to again with #0000 and more mothers... the blue will go away, the pipes will be shiny and your buell will gain 10mph ! P.S. ok, Im not sure about the hp part but truly your pipes will not get blue again unless you have a problem. Also if you can find Flitz in your part of the country use that instead of mothers, it leaves a protective coating on ss and aluminum for less oxidation. | ||

M1 the pipes after you polish them will be silver but ride it for 20 mins and they will turn gold again.I think we already talked about this some time ago.Flitz works alright but Eagle 1 is the best I've tried.iTS alot faster to work with.Helpful hint though try applying with paper towel and then polishing or taking it off with terry cloth,it works much better with any of the above products. | ||

We did indeed discuss this some time ago... I just want as many opinions as I can get just to be absolutely certain that I won't lose the gold color. I love the gold color. I would give it my last miller lite if it wouldn't dis-color it , and if I didn't drink Bass... It's getting to the point now that they have turned purple most of the way to the second bend on the rear pipe and almost all the way around to the third bend on the front so I'll need to polish them. I just don't want to lose my pretty gold color . You say Eagle 1 "metal polish" is best? I'll get some soon. Thanks. If they DO stay silver, I'm going to stop by your house and drink your beer... The best reason to use steel wool is to polish the pipes. It takes out the factory hash marks and make the pipes smooth. For that first cut down sandpaper works ok too, but rough to use with the pipes on the bike and too easy to scratch other stuff up. I too use a shop rag to polish afterwards, and also for maintenance. This is a 3 beer job BTW Corona is the best beer for bike work too | ||

What difference does it make if the pipes turn a little color? Hell it just means you ride the damn thing instead of letting it sit all the time. Ride the piss out of it & damn the color of the pipes. | ||

I once saw a restoration of a beautiful bathtub-bodied Triumph at a show . . . .. they dropped 5 points off the judging because the pipes were blue up near the heads . . .. idiots M1 -- polish away, bud, secure in the knowledge that the gold color will return in 20/30 mikes of riding . . .. . couldn't keep it away if ya tried btw, I picked up a roll of 400 grit wet/dry at a nearby machinery store . . . . 50 feet by 1 inch wide . . . .. worked great for the initial sanding Seeu mentioned . . . .wrapped it around the pipe and made like a shoeshine guy |
