Hey yall I'm in the middle of doing the oil pump drive gear. When I opened my timing cover my rotator cup was stuck so tight I couldn't pull it out without bending tabs trying to pull it with pliers or channel locks. So I decided just to pull the gear case cover with it still on and it pulled out my #2 cam since it was stuck to the cup I guess and all of my other cams fell out. So now I think I've got the retiming procedure down from the manual and reading previous posts but my #2 cam and my rotator cup still will not seperate... Anybody got any suggestions on how to get this thing apart? |

Those cups are pretty cheap as I recall. Just in case it has to be sacrificed. Just be sure you get the injected flavor and not the sportster flavor. I'm pretty sure they are different. |

I'm pretty sure that the cup is bolted to the cam. The cam end shaft is keyed. Was there not a bolt? Did you remove that already? Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, but I just pulled mine. |

Not a dumb question, I did remove the bolt though but I'm guessing there is a seal between them and they are just stuck. I tried prying on the cam gear with a pry bar but don't want to risk messing up the gear or the cam so I diddnt pry really hard |

Mine was "stuck on". I don't know if it was corrosion welded to the cam or not. Can you get heat or penetrating oil on it? |

Mine was stuck on as well after removing the bolt. I finally just yanked the stuck snot out of it. Figured I'd replace it with one of the billet steel ones we sell at the shop here if it broke. Had to come off somehow. Anyway it came off fine so I'll probably reuse it. |

Yeah, just the bolt, as far as I know. Didn't have that problem when I did my oil pump gear. Might try a heat gun and tapping with a soft hammer. Since more force than you are comfortable in using seems to be needed, my '01 X-1 parts book lists the 'trigger rotor' as p/n 32422-98. Given no suffixes, ect, it should be available at your nearest H-D shop. Just ask for the part number, otherwise you get the deer in the headlights look and "Huh?". One more thing, don't get too worried if the engine sounds terrible at start up. Mine did; turned out the lifters had 'bled down' while on the shelf. A sedate, sub 3k RPM trip around the block solved the issue. Hope this helps, Dave |

Just wanted to update everyone, I hosed it all in penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. I went out to the garage just a little while ago with the mindset this is an easily replaceable part, grabbed it with some pliers and yanked so hard I was rocking the bike on the pit ill stands... Didn't budge, so I then braced myself against the frame with one hand and yanked like hell with the other and the rotator cup finally popped off. Can't believe that thing was on there so tight but thank yall for the info and encouragement! |

If you store the lifters in a baggie or cup with oil to cover them, they won't bleed down or take as long to be quiet. |
