One of the magnets came unglued. It didn't take kindly to being in a blender, and put its proverbial dick in the mashed potatoes. |

Shaft broke at speed, forward momentum forced the alternator bell to keep spinning on the stator, grinding it down, melting it, and shorting it out. Pretty much a perfect storm of failure. I have never seen the output shaft of an H-D derived engine break like that. Is this yours? |

Oooh, I didn't see the mangled crank before. That's going to be expensive. |

Wow! Craptastic! Looks like an engine part out to me. Yikes. I'm thinking there had to be some extreme forces at work. Drag bike? |

Crank nut snug and tight? Maybe magnet let go, maybe crank nut backed off (torque spec wrong in service manual) and bell went askew and spinny bits and stationary bits occupied same space at same time. Terrible news, awesome pictures! Wow. Imagine what it takes to shear that shaft like that. |

What's the adjuster shoe look like? If it separated at high rpm, it might have wedged the primary chain, causing the rotor to immobilize while the crank was still turning. Teeth broken off sprocket? Something sure froze up while something it was attached to was at high rpm. Did the wheel lock up or the transmission explode? |

Whether the magnet coming loose caused a chain of events leading to the shaft failure or a bad bearing, or over-tightened primary chain caused the shaft failure in turn shredding the magnets - either way, not pretty. Oil in the engine? Primary? From the look of the remaining end of the shaft, it looks like it got pretty hot. Heat and stress could cause something like that. Stroker time! |

Thy whirly parts doth sought communion with the sun . . . . . . . . I'm pretty sure . . . .at my age . . . that's what my internals look like. |

Primary cover was taken of by the PO's friend, I got a box with the chain & rotor in it Crank nut is snug as a bug, Crank spins smooth & no play in the bottom end no teeth missing, Trans looks fine to me oil in engine Idk if the rear wheel locked, not sure if it would in this case pic of cover & shoe

Been there. Bought it this way.
Mine had/has NO noted internal damage to the case/cover. Call me lucky (except for the crank part). |

What do you suppose it was? flaw in heat treating? Little crack gradually growing out? |

I'm pretty sure . . . .at my age . . . that's what my internals look like. I have x-rays from 2008 that PROVE my internals look that way... For the bike...wow. Whatever happened, it was welding for a while until everything gave up the ghost! |
